Twenty-five Members of House Supporting No Nukes, Fight Child Hunger Resolution

Representatives Peter DeFazio of Oregon and Grace Napolitano of California are the latest to sign on to the Global Security Priorities Resolution (H. Res 278). The resolution calls for the President to work toward reducing nuclear arsenals worldwide, a critical step for preventing nuclear terrorism. The savings from disarmament would be diverted toward securing nuclear materials from potential terrorist theft. In addition funds would be used to fight child hunger in impoverished countries, a vital step in achieving peace and stability overseas.

The resolution states that savings from nuclear disarmament could reach 13 billion dollars annually. In comparison, 5 billion annually for school feeding and other programs could practically wipe out hunger among school-age children across the globe.

The resolution opens with the summary:

Recognizing the paramount need to address the threat of international terrorism and protect the international security of the United States by reducing the number of and accessibility to nuclear weapons and preventing their proliferation, and directing a portion of the resulting savings towards child survival, hunger, and universal education, and calling on the President to take action to achieve these goals.
