Twilf Label on Palin Sends Urban Sleuths Running for Explanation

Twilf? That was the caption that led the news while Anchorman Brian Williams called it a top story. This was the news from Current TV that ran a cartoon in which it called Sarah Palin a Twilf an another unflattering comment.

Most were uncertain what to make of the story. One thing was for sure. Calling Sarah Palin a twilf was not meant as a compliment. It is sure to provoke a considerable response for Palin's camp as well as the conservatives.

The real question however is what is a twilf and how did it apply to Palin? Upon some brief investigation, surprisingly it did not take long to find various definitions of the world twilf. Most of which are not even worth to reprint or discuss to be perfectly honest. It is somewhat fascinating to think that somebody somewhere came up with the word in the first place then applied one of the most bizarre definitions to it imaginable.

It is interesting to think that a word like twilf or the story, as it applies to Palin even made the news. It is obvious that the application of the word to Palin has something to do with insulting her intelligence. She endured a tremendous amount of criticism during her run for the vice presidency and will likely continue to do so. This is not unusual for somebody in public office.

The amount of scrutiny she continues to invite however is fascinating. Palin isn't really doing anything out of the ordinary for somebody in her position. She had been in public office for quite some time before running for the Vice Presidency and it is safe to say most people didn't care. It is highly likely that most did not even know who she was.

Now everything seems to have changed. Even after having her ticket defeated, she continues to make news and is the subject of social commentary on nearly a daily basis. Is Palin really that interesting? To be honest, the continuing Palin saga isn't even all that entertaining. Letterman continued to make jokes about Palin and her family which ended up in him having to make a public apology. What has happened to the culture of late night comedy that something like that would ever occur? When did Letterman start apologizing for anything? How is it that this person is even worth mentioning anymore? Had Palin not run on the Republican ticket, there would be no interest in her today at any level.

This newest jab is remarkable for several reasons. The nature of the twilf remark is really nothing more than another jab at Palin's public persona. That persona is meant to be one of a person with limited intelligence. It may or may not be true. In any event, it has been done to death. It is not news worthy or entertaining. Simply choosing a different way of saying the same thing over and over again really isn't interesting. Or is it? Clearly this writer's opinion about the twilf remark could be in the minority. If a major news network thinks it is a top story then something must be amiss. Something has been lost along the information highway.

Fortunately this won't last long. A good tire fire or cheese bacteria should be along soon and this twilf hysteria will quickly fall to the wayside.
