'Twilight' Eclipses Ho-Hum MTV Movie Awards

Most of the Major MTV Movie Awards Went to Robert Pattinson; Best Line Went to a 7-Year Old

COMMENTARY | Opening the MTV Movie Awards was the usual, cleverly done movie spoof -- this time to the "The Hangover." This parody also mixed it up with the lesbian scene from "Black Swan," the cry for help from "127 Hours" and a variety of scenes from "The Social Network." It was certainly one of the better moments from an otherwise slow-moving telecast. "Saturday Night Live's" Jason Sudeikis hosted the festivities by telling a number of Schwarzenegger jokes. Unfortunately, a number of them kept falling flat like a lead balloon. Sudeikis may be funny on "SNL," but not on MTV

If you were one of the countless "Twilight" fans, this was your night of nights. The film overall won a total of five popcorn trophies, including Best Male and Female Performances, as well as the coveted Best Movie. Something must have been in the air during the awards presentation: a lot of jokes from other celebrities were not getting it right. For instance, when Pattinson was introducing Reese Witherspoon for her MTV Generation Award, he actually dropped the F-Bomb without it being censored. The censors were certainly asleep at the wheel. Pattinson may be a great vampire, but he's a bore at speeches.

On a brighter note, MTV initiated a new category this year: "Best Line From a Movie." The winner was 7-year-old Alexys Nycole Sanchez. Her brilliant quote, "I want to get chocolate wasted," was from the film "Grown Ups." She gave the sweetest acceptance speech I have ever heard. Most likely the MTV producers kept this award show a tad bit cleaner because they had a minor in the house. However, the ceremony would not be complete without some obviously staged, but trying to be spontaneous, shocking moments.

During the Best Kiss presentation, when Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were onstage as the winners, Pattinson decided to kiss someone else in the audience. The lucky recipient was none other than Taylor Lautner, who did not win his own award throughout the evening. Another so-called surprise moment was when Justin Bieber, who was channeling Don Johnson from "Miami Vice" with his choice of wardrobe, showed up out of nowhere. He accepted his award for "Best Jaw-Dropping Moment," appropriately enough.

Lastly, Pattinson, Stewart, and Lautner were together to present to the audience and TV viewers the exclusive sneak peek of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn." Now that was an entertaining movie trailer. It even got me interested in the hoopla.

It seemed like it was the Pattinson and "Twilight" Movie Awards instead of MTV. RPattz and KStew may look great in the "Twilight" films and on magazine covers, but, as far as giving acceptance speeches or presenting, they are as exciting as paint drying. Lautner gave the acceptance speech for the cast and crew when they won Best Movie. Lautner is definitely the articulate one of the three actors from "Twilight."
