Twilight Novella: Stephenie Meyer to Publish Free Online Ebook, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Available June 2010
Fans of the Twilight Saga will know that Bree Tanner was the newborn vampire created by vampire villain Victoria as part of Victoria's plan to form a legion of new vampires to pursue Twilight's human heroine, Bella Swan. In the book, Bree is created and soon after killed. Not much of her story is revealed in Eclipse.
According to her website, Meyer began the story "just for fun" as she was editing the final versions of other Twilight novels. "Her story is a nice complement to Eclipse; it explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew." In fact, the novella became an asset in production and filming of the Eclipse movie. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, director David Slade, and actress Jodelle Ferland, who plays Bree in the movie, all read the novella to add insight to the characters portrayed in the story and in the movie.
As the story grew longer, Meyer envisioned it as part of the newly conceived guidebook, The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide. Unfortunately, this initial plan didn't work out. Completed, the story of Bree Tanner reached a length of almost two hundred pages, too long for the guidebook.
Discussions with the publisher resulted in the idea of publishing The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner as a story on its own, offering it free online for a limited time as well as releasing a printed version.
"I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free," explains Meyer on her website. "You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift."
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is set for release at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 in hardcover for $13.99 with a first printing of 1.5 million copies, according to a press release by publisher Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. One dollar of each copy sold will be donated to the American Red Cross.
The online version will be available from June 7 to July 5, 2010 at www.breetanner.com.

Post a CommentVery interesting. I will definitely be reading this.
Just as it should be. Meyer's already wasted enough paper.
Great report!
This should be good...I'll definitely have to read it! Loved the Twilight saga.
