Twilight Secrets: What Secrets Did Peter Facinelli (Dr. Cullen) Reveal at the Twilight Convention?

Peter Facinelli Tells All at Nashville Twilight Convention

Kathryn E. Darden
As reported in Nashville Twilight Convention Brings Vampires, Wolves & Peter Facinelli to Music City, the Official Twilight Convention has been taking place this weekend in Nashville, Tennessee. I have already shared some secrets revealed by Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) at the convention, but he is not the only one who shared secrets from the set! Peter Facinelli (Dr. Carlisle Cullen) was also the guest at a Question and Answer session where he revealed interesting facts about his life, career and the Twilight movies: Twilight, New Moon and the upcoming Eclipse.

Peter Facinelli on His Family

Facinelli spoke fondly of his family and how the time he has to be away from them is one of the hardest things about his career. He and actress/wife Jennie Garth have three daughters together: Luca Bella (born in 1997), Lola Ray (born in 2002) and Fiona Eve (born in 2006). He said one of the other bad things about being in the Twilight movies was having to spend two hours in the salon two days in a row having his hair died from dark brown to red and finally to his blond Cullen shade.

Peter Facinelli on the Cullen Family

"The cast is really great. We are like a family," Facinelli said, adding that it makes him happy to see the Cullen family together. He revealed that off camera he is like the big brother, but on camera he has to work on his motions, vocal tones, etc. to try to give the impression of age and experience. He said he had drawn up and almost memorized a thorough, in-depth chronology of Dr. Cullen's long life, and that the cast members like to ask him questions like, "Hey, what year did you bite me?" He also told his fans he practiced stitching chicken breasts for the scene where he stitches up Bella's arm.

Peter Facinelli on Vampires

When it comes to vampires, Facinelli had an interesting take. He claimed he has done very little research to play a vampire, because he's playing a vampire who is trying to be human. "My research is more about what it is to be human and why it is so important for Carlisle to hold on to that humanity. The good vampires aren't necessarily good, they're just trying to be different than their nature, and the nomads aren't really bad vampires - they are just acting true to their nature. It's kind of like like a mountain lion trying to be a house cat."

Peter Facinelli on Eclipse

Facinelli reported that viewers were going to "see some action" in the third Twilight movie. "What I love about Eclipse is that you get to see a side of Carlisle you haven't seen before. The Cullens have all these abilities, but they have to hide them most of the time." Obviously excited about finally getting the chance to showcase the vampires' amazing capabilities, he added, "There are some really great battle sequences in Eclipse."

Peter Facinelli on Dr. Cullen's Scarf

Observant Twilight and New Moon fans may have noticed Dr. Cullen wears a scarf in his scenes. Facinelli said he created a back story around the scarf, and that it represented two things. Carlisle's scarf was something a gentleman would wear - something constant he could have kept in his wardrobe through most of his years since the 16th century. It also protected his neck in case Cullen had a fear of being bitten on the neck. Facinelli revealed that while Dr. Cullen wore the scarf in the first two movies and during part of Eclipse, there is a pivotal scene in Eclipse where he removes his scarf and doesn't put it on again for the rest of the movie. Facinelli stated this was done partly out of respect for the werewolves and their willingness to work alongside the vampires and also as a signal he was ready to take action and overcome any fear.

Peter Facinelli on Nashville

Right after his flight landed in Nashville, Facinelli posted on Twitter, "It's snowing and I forgot my coat. Good thing Vampires are supposed to be cold." However, the reception he got from his Nashville fans was definitely very warm. During the Q & A session, Facinelli commented on how much he loved Southern names and said he was going to change his name to Billy Bob Hill.

Peter Facinelli's Favorite Scene

There was also something about Rob Defranco and his bikini dance, but I guess you had to be there. Funny, warm, and appearing to be genuinely fond of his fans, Peter Facinelli was one of the highlights of the Nashville Twilight Convention.
