Twilight Series: Will There Be a Fifth Book?

Stephenie Meyer Talks About the Possibility of Fifth Twilight Book on Oprah

Julie Lind
With all of the excitement over the release of New Moon on November 20, 2009, Twilight fans can't help but wonder, will there be a fifth book in the Twilight series?

The answer to that question is...it depends. According to Stephenie Meyer's interview backstage on the Oprah show, Meyer says she writes her books for her own enjoyment. If she feels too much pressure to write a book she can't get in the mood to write.

To feel motivated to write, Meyer says she has to tell herself that the book she is writing will never get published. She said she has to believe that her book will never leave her computer in order to work on it.

How can Stephenie Meyer not feel pressure to write? She is no doubt surrounded by Twilight fans wherever she goes. I'm sure her agent and publisher, who would make a ton of money off a fifth book, are hoping she will get in the mood to write another book in the Twilight series.

Stephenie Meyer's attitude about writing is quite different from other authors who would do just about anything to get their books published.

Stephenie Meyer felt violated in 2008 when her book Midnight Sun was illegally distributed on the internet while she was writing it. Midnight Sun is the same story as Twilight, but from Edward's perspective. Once that happened, Meyer said she no longer felt like the book was hers and stopped writing it. She put the rough draft on her website so Twilight fans wouldn't be tempted to go find it on the illegal site.

It sounds like Twilight fans might have to wait a while for future books about Edward and Bella. In the interview backstage on Oprah, Meyer says she's a little burnt out on vampires right now. She would rather focus on her aliens which are the subject of her book, The Host. Meyer plans on The Host being a three-part series. She is currently working on turning The Host into a movie.

Meyer also has a fantasy book in the works, which she says is totally different from the books she has written so far.

Stephanie Meyer never thought she would end up writing, much less being on the New York Times Bestsellers list for 143 weeks. She had never even written a novel before writing Twilight.

There is some hope for a fifth book in the Twilight series. When asked if Stephenie Meyer knows what will happen to Bella and Edward, she said, "I know exactly what happens to Bella and Edward." But unfortunately she's keeping that a secret for now.

Interesting; I'll have to discuss this with my Twilight-obsessed 14 year old relative over Thanksgiving. You know you're my expert on all things Twilight!
