Twilight Turtle Appearance
Don't mistake this cute turtle for a stuffed toy. Although the head, legs, tail and underside of the Twilight Turtle are soft and stuffed, the hard shell prevents it from being a strictly huggable toy, although many toddlers snuggle up to it regardless.
When unlit, the shell is a brownish green, but when lit it takes on the color of whichever light you choose. The colors are selected to reflect the most soothing possible lights--green for the growth of nature, deep purple-blue for the vast sky and ocean and warm amber to reflect the comforting hue of the autumn leaves.
The Twilight Turtle's lights project onto the wall and ceiling in the shape of eight constellations your children will learn to identify as well as a slender crescent moon. The stars themselves are five pointed, for a fairy tale display with no blinking or distractions from the comfortable glow. The Twilight Turtle is meant to soothe rather than entertain.
Operation of the Twilight Turtle
The Twilight turtle has a simple four button operation (one for each color plus on/off button) he's easy for even the littlest one to operate. Even a two year old will quickly learn what each button does, giving him control of the light.
It automatically shuts off after 45 minutes, so she can keep it on until she falls asleep without draining the batteries all night. This allows plenty of time to fall asleep, but with the easy operation, a child who awakens in the night can easily turn him on again and fall back to sleep under his soothing glow.
Fear of the Dark and the Twilight Turtle
This was the last toy purchased for our two year old daughter in the hopes that she would conquer her fear of the dark. It was the last toy, because it was the solution. After months of doing everything we were supposed to, this little turtle reinvented night time for my daughter by making it a place of beauty and fun instead of fear.
We knew that her fear of the dark was behind her (for now) when she exclaimed the next morning, "Its too light! Make it dark for my turtle!" We pulled the shades, turned out the nightlights and watched the Twilight Turtle's light dance on the dark wall. She's slept next to him every night since without fear. We currently don't even have a nightlight in the bedroom at her request as it would take away the glow from her turtle.
Reviews and cons of the Twilight Turtle
Although most reviews on Amazon praise this wonderful turtle, there are several reoccurring complaints. Some say that the glow of the amber stars are too faint, however we've found it to only be slightly darker than the blue and green lights. If your child's bedroom is light due to street lights or city glow, you may find you have to pull the curtains or use the brighter colors.
Another complaint is that the stars projected by the Twilight Turtle appear fuzzy on high ceilings, which we have also found not to be true for us. Our daughter's room has vaulted ceilings and the turtle's light fills the room without a trace of distortion when placed on her low bed. Her large room is nearly filled with stars and in some placements, the stars even spill over to her walls.
Do keep in mind that when the Twilight turtle's lights burn out, it is not possible to replace them. As the price has been running around 18.00, its not unreasonable to replace it after a year or two of good service, if your child still loves his or her turtle.
Also, please be sure that you don't expect the stars to move or the colors to change on their own. This is designed as a soothing sleep aid, not a nighttime entertainment projector. Changing colors and moving stars are fun--just too distracting for a child struggling to fall asleep.
Other Cloud B models
The Twilight Turtle has two sisters: The Twilight Sea Turtle projects green, blue and aqua marine as well as images of endangered animals while the Twilight Ladybug projects ruby red, sapphire blue and emerald green. Both are as cute as the original Twilight Sea Turtle.
We're very glad we purchased the Twilight Turtle from Cloud B and expect to replace him once his lights burn out. He's well worth the money for even a few months of pure delight.
