Twins Joined at Head to Be Surgically Separated

Risky Procedure for Twins Will Hopefully Allow Them to Lead Normal Lives

Anastasia and Tatiana Dogaru, three-year-old twins who are joined at the head, will likely undergo surgery to be separated.

The twins are from Italy but have been in Dallas, Texas for over two years for testing to see if it would be possible for them to be separated surgically. The condition that the girls are in only happens with 1 in 2.5 million born children. Their condition is very rare and so is the procedure to have conjoined twins separated. The surgery is also very difficult and risky.

Though full of risk, the surgery seems to be totally necessary for the survival of Anastasia and Tatiana. Doctors agree that the complications that could arise from the procedure are worth the risk as the girls would more than likely die eventually from medical problems that would arise from them being connected. Along with their parents, the twins will make the trip to Cleveland, Ohio to begin the process of being separated in April.

Anastasia and Tatiana are normal little girls despite their condition. They do all the things that all girls their age do. They are smart and both girls speak Romanian and English for languages.

The biggest concern with the surgery is that the girls will not be able to function separately after the surgery. They both use many of the same blood vessels. Another huge concern is that Anastasia uses Tatiana's kidneys, as her own do not work properly. The solution to this problem will be a kidney transplant after the surgery. Recovery from the surgery will take several months for both girls and will prove to be very difficult for them. Tatiana's health after surgery will be the biggest concern as she is more liable to have complications.

The World Craniofacial Foundation has been supplying financial aid to the Dogaru family as they have been living in the United States. Without great help like this, procedures like this would not be possible due to the cost being too much.

Hopefully all goes well for both Anastasia and Tatiana and they can go on to live perfectly normal lives. People all over the world will be praying for and thinking of them.
