Twitter, the Next Big Thing?

So what exactly is Twitter? Whether you use it or not you have at least heard of it. Everyone from celebrities to teachers to your teenage kids are all using Twitter. If anything it is the latest rage in the messaging blogging world and just keeps growing.

Twitter is a privately funded company base out of San Franciso, CA. It was started as a side project in 2006 and has grown to a service supporting several devices and networks. Twitter was the brainchild of which is a creative environment in San Francisco, CA. The initial Twitter prototype was constructed in two weeks sometime in March 2006 and launched publicly in August of 2006. Twitter grew so fast and became so popular that in May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded.

The result of using Twitter to stay connected with friends, relatives, and coworkers is that you have a sense of what folks are up to but you are not expected to respond to any updates unless you want to. You can totally control the information you receive. You can view it or just ignore it, either way it never begs you to read it or else! Additionally, users are very much in control of whose updates they receive, when they receive them, and on what device. For example, Twitter provide settings for scheduling to automatically turn off at dinnertime and users can switch off Twitter updates at any point.

Plainly put Twitter is a fast and convenient way to stay in touch with those who you choose to stay connected with. You no longer have to worry about the lengthy and sometimes boring email updates. Just a couple lines or less of what is going on or that someone you care about is feeling. Twitter allows me to keep up with what I want to know about while having virtually zero impact on my day. If you are not using it try it out. You got nothing to lose, and since it is free to use there is no excuse not to log on and join in the fanfare it has created.
