Two Basement Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Sometimes a Homeowner Needs to Put This Extra Functional Room in Their Homes, but Decorating Them Can Be Difficult

S. Landis
Basements are often dark and dank places that serve as storage areas underneath our homes. Many of us put the washer and driers in our basements and use the rest of the area for a workshop or storage space, depending on our interests. A lucky few individuals use their basement as recreational areas. Regardless of the purpose a basement serves, sometimes it is necessary to place a bathroom in the basement.

Decorating a bathroom basement can be difficult. A Spartan look goes well with most basements, but if a homeowner goes through the trouble of putting a bathroom in their basement will want a little more than just a functional room in the basement. Most basement rooms will have poor natural lighting and most basements are not designed with an eye for long term comfort in mind.

This does not mean that the homeowner has to put up with a bathroom that is only functional, merely that he has to keep these things in mind when trying to decorate bathroom basements. The key is to pick a theme and stick with it. Even a simple scheme will be a vast improvement in a finished basement than simply going with the somewhat dark cement exterior provided by most basements.

A Few Bathroom Basement Decorating Ideas

Now it may be tempting to go with a mining theme since it's underground, but this seems to be a little overboard and a homeowner may want something bright and cheery instead. Instead of going with a mining theme, it may be more appropriate to decide on Victorian or Western schemes. Watching any old Western will work, for the Western theme, but the selection of colors is important. Wall borders may be chosen with pictures of cactuses, buffalo, or other elements of the old West, and the walls should be earth tones. The creative person may wish to use the tiles to create a picture but that is far more work than most people wish to put into decorating one of the smallest rooms in their house

A Victorian theme would go well with the dark decor of the basement, but would be harder to pull off basement bathrooms were not common during this time period. Furnishings such as the mirror and the washbasin, better known to us as a sink, are required. A few pictures of Victorian cities can round out a theme. A bookshelf-like stand for placing towels and other goods that are required in any bathroom may help finish of this look.

Other Basement Bathroom Ideas

The homeowner who does not want to go to a lot of trouble decorating a bathroom in his basement does not need to do so. Simply painting the walls, choosing the right tub and laying the linoleum improves the looks of any room that was laid in an area of the house where the walls are comprised of the concrete blocks that were used to make the foundation of the home. The primary purpose of this room is more functional than decorative, after all.

Whether the homeowner wants to go through an elaborate decoration scheme for his basement bathroom or just wants to give it the look of other rooms in the house is a decision to be made by the people who built and paid for the room. Those who suffer from poor decorating skills may choose to hire an interior decorator and have him deal with it instead. This is probably the best basement bathroom decorating tip this writer can give.
