Two Cats and a Radio Flyer

Niki Tungren
My sister and I weren't fighting and the cats were still in the wagon. Things were going well. Running away was going to be easy. I didn't know where to go, but I knew I wanted to leave. Adventure called to me!

I had loaded up the rusty Radio Flyer that we had used for years, and I convinced my sister to come with me. We took the necessities: a pillow, a blanket, some marshmallows (to roast over the fire that we would need to build when nighttime came), our jackets, and most importantly, our two cats. My Dad was out working in the yard when he saw us pull our packed wagon towards the road.

"Where ya goin'?" he called to us.

Confidently I replied, "We're running away!" The sense of adventure was clearly getting to me and the thrill of the unexpected left little conversation in me.

"I'll see you at dinner then!" he called as we turned onto the road.

Living in the country had its perks, all of our neighbors knew us, and we had no reason to feel unsafe. And so our adventure officially began. Things were going according to plan... so far.

I blame the Second Law of Thermodynamics for the deterioration of our situation, of course at that time the only person I had to blame was my sister. This perfect adventure was turning out to be not-so-perfect. The cats had jumped out of the wagon and ran home within five minutes of our trek, I was tired of pulling the wagon and my sister started calling me names, and then the wagon tipped which spilled our food supply (the marshmallows) and my pillow onto the road. However, being the intrepid adventurer that I was, I quickly recovered from my setback and pushed on to unknown lands. We walked for a few more minutes and then my sister started getting bored. There is something to be said for the impatience of an older sister: it is to be feared.

"This isn't a very good adventure, let's go back." Since she is my older sister and I wanted to be just like her, I agreed. Such a stirring argument could have won over crowds. Within a half an hour of when we set out, we had returned with a better idea of what we would need to actually run away. It didn't matter... dinner was ready.
