Two Harrowing Experiences While a Passenger in a Moving Car

Buckle Up for Safety

Lee Hansen
While returning from a trip to visit his mother, my Dad was driving the car back home. Seated in the front was my mother. 2 siblings and I were sitting in the back.

The car was a 1972 White Plymouth Fury. As Dad was driving a deer seemingly came out of nowhere. Dad did a quick swerving maneuver in his attempts to avoid hitting the deer. But at highway speeds and cars on both sides of us, it wasn't easy to stop.

Sad to say the deer got the raw end of that bargain. We had the proof of a large dent molded into the car because of his body making a heavy impact with the car. Knowing that one of us could have been killed was hard to grasp at that particular moment.

Another time while driving locally we were behind a pick-up truck that was apparently moving some items to his place of residence. There was a safe distance between our car and the truck. In a matter of moments the mattress spring from the truck flew out and was making its ugly aim towards us. My father displayed some quick thinking and screeched next to a white fence that was on the right side of the road.

At that time seat belts were in the car but I don't know if it was mandatory to wear them in our state. Fortunately we had buckled up for safety. Those incidents made quite an impression on me.

One of the first things I always do when getting into a car as a passenger or driver is to put on my seat belt. It has become a good habit that I do religiously, should an accident occur. Now cars are equipped with air bags too for an extra measure of safety. I know that there are arguments about the pros and cons of them.

When you drive please make sure you buckle up and also the people that are riding with you. You never know when you might need it. While it may not always save a life, the risks of survival might be better while strapping one on.

I agree....seatbelts save lives, statistics show and your personal experience I hope is a wake up call for those who don't.

This article brings back memories for me to. Not too long ago while traveling on the highway a large deer jumped out of the woods and almost hit a man on his motorcycle. He just missed the man. It was a very large deer.

I take these to heart, Lee. Once my dad was driving and oil was spilled on the road. Before he realized what to do, he lost control and the car spun around. Though nothing untoward happened, the incident that happened years ago is unforgettable! Another tme, I was riding my two wheeler. A boat was being pushed along the road to a nearby sea. I tried to overtake but it was too long. An oncoming bus sqeeezed me in between. I just had enough space! siva

I don't drive at night because deer are everywhere here and there are many collisions.
