Two Humorous and Not so Humorous Limericks About the US Economy

In Honor of National Poetry Month 2009

Sheri Fresonke Harper
I wrote this first limerick in honor of National Poetry Month 2009 as a way to warm up for the challenge of writing about the US economy and being humorous at the same time:

There once was a financier pyramid
who piked up mortgages in valid
the economic bubble went pop
Obama tried to give it a prop
Now us taxpayers live in fear of it

Right. Not so funny. So I told my husband, Robert E Harper, about the little exercise in poetic fun about the US Economy, and together we came up with this more fun limerick in honor of National Poetry Month 2009:

I once had an Uncle named Sam
who minted money like spam
he stimulated our bliss
gave his wife a big kiss
and said "What a proud forger I am"

I hope this improves your enjoyment of National Poetry Month 2009 and the fun we are all having with the US Economy.

  • The US Economy can be humorous or not so humorous, take your pick.
  • National Poetry Month 2009 takes place during April.
  • Uncle Sam and Obama leads us, however we kid.
A limerick is a five-line poem with a strict form (AABBA), originally popularized in English by Edward Lear, which intends to be witty or humorous, and is sometimes obscene with humorous intent.

You are right, Sheri, your fist poem isn't very funny, but I loved the second one, even chuckling a bit as I read it. Funny thing though, we must be "kissing cousins," 'cause my Uncle Sam sounds an awful lot like yours! (^;^)

It's good to find something to laugh at during these hard economic times.

These are great - I don't know how to write these wish I could though.
