What You Will Need At The Grocery Store
The first step is to go to the local grocery store and find two ripe avocados. How can you tell if an avocado is ripe? By its color and by its feel.
Ripe avocados will have a dark color two them, and will feel relatively soft. However, if the avocado has air pockets, it is best to avoid it - these are comparable to bananas with brown spots on them - they are beginning to rot.
After you have found two ripe avocados, your next task is to find an a small to medium sized onion (red, yellow, or white will work), and a ripe tomato. If you don't like onions, you can make the guacamole with tomatoes only, or, if you don't like tomatoes, you can make the guacamole with onions only. If you don't like either, that's fine too, although your guacamole will have a better overall flavor if you at least add one or the other.
Once you have these three main ingredients, the only ingredient you will have left is the seasoning. You have two options:
Method 1: Make the guacamole with a pre-made guacamole mix
Method 2: Make your own seasoning for the guacamole
If you have never made guacamole before, it is best to use the pre-made seasoning so that you can get a feel for what guacamole should taste like. You can usually find the pre-made seasoning right next to the avocados.
If you decide to make your own seasoning, all you will really need are salt and a small bottle of lime juice. If you would like, you can also use garlic salt or pepper, but these are not required.
Making The Guacamole
The first thing you will need to do is cut each avocado in half and scoop out the insides into a bowl. When you cut the avocado in half, all you really need to do is cut the avocado until you feel the seed with the knife, and after you have cut around the circumference of the avocado, you can scoop out the seed in the middle throw away the seed in the middle. You can scoop out the seed with a spoon, or you can use a knife, but be careful not to cut yourself. At this point, you can use a fork to crush the avocados.
After you have crushed the avocados, you can add the tomato and the onion. You may wish to use only 1/2 of the onion or tomato, and of course, you will need to dice the onion and tomato before adding them to the avocado. You are now ready for the seasoning.
If you purchased the pre-made seasoning, you can simply add it to the mixture, stir everything together, cover, and chill for 1/2 hour. If you decided to make your own seasoning, depending on how salty you want the avocado to be, simply add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of salt to the mixture, add garlic salt and other seasonings if desired, and 1 tablespoon of lime juice. Cover, chill for 1/2 hour, serve, and enjoy with your favorite dish!
