Two New Recalls Over Excessive Lead in Children's Sunglasses

Marissa Mason
The CPSC has announced that over a quarter of a million children's sunglasses and about 64,000 holiday figurines from Home Depot are the latest to come out of China contaminated with excessive lead. The products all both popular seasonal items all put on sale within the last year.

Parents doing the concerned thing when buying sunglasses mean to protect young eyes might be in for disappointment. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a joint recall with FGX International Inc. due to excessive levels of lead in kid's sunglasses the company sold. Approximately 260,000 sunglass were sold between January 2007 and November 2007.

The styles vary considerably so consumers are asked to check carefully. Each of the 15 styles of sunglasses have the style name printed inside the left temple arm. The name Foster Grant could also appear instead. The names of the styles sold are:

Balloon, Bond, Boom, Bubble Gum, Bullseye, Buzz, Conqueror Jr.,Curly Q, Encompass Jr. IK, Fade IK, Gadget IK, Iceman, Lily, Outer Space, Pluto

FGX has pictures of each product listed at their website, as well as a diagram showing were to locate the name. The sunglass were sold nationwide for between $3 and $11. Concerned consumers can contact FGX International toll-free at (877) 227-0104 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.fgxi.com

The Home Depot holiday figurines are plastic snowmen and bears. They were sold between October 2007 through November 2007 for $10 to $20. The SKU on the products are: 894-825, 894-893, 898-964, 967-467, and can be found on the bottom of the items. Pictures are also available at Home Depot's Website.

The CPSC advises customers to immediately stop using the recalled items and return them to the store they were purchased.

Excessive levels of lead is one of the most common reasons for recalls in 2007. Lead poisoning can affect adults as well as children. It can cause irritability, joint pain, and trouble concentrating in adults, and stunted growth, ADD, hearing impairment, learning disabilities or even retardation in children with heavy exposure. Lead poisoning is even a threat to unborn children as it can cross the placenta through the mother's bloodstream. Excessive lead in consumer products can eventually contaminate our soil, air, and water.

Thank You so much! I just bought my grandson some sunglsses for Christmas (we're in sunny Arizona). I will check them out. You know, the U.S. has to start penalizing China bigtime. This is getting rediculous!
