Two Simple Ways to Tell If Your Diet Isn't Working

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.

We are a nation of dieters. The United States is said to be one of the most obese countries, but we live to diet. So why aren't our diets working? I can't say that I've tried every diet, but I have tried a lot of them and one reason fad diets don't work is because it's an easy way out. With a fad diet, or some diet pills, you aren't actually making that life change you need to make in order to actually be successful. You can not just take a pill for six months and expect that to keep you thin and in shape for the rest of your life. You actually have to learn to eat better and keep up an exercise routine if you want your diet to truly work for you.

So how can you tell if your diet isn't working for you? The hard way is that you must realize that fad diets don't really work for anyone, not in the long run anyway. But we're not talking about hard things here, we're talking simple. So, the first simple way to tell that your diet isn't the right choice is that you've stepped on the scale over and over for the past two weeks and you still aren't losing any weight. Maybe you even gained some weight, or only lost one pound. In two weeks, with a good diet and exercise plan, you could easily lose four pounds. Your lack of weight loss is a clue that you need to step up your game. Cut your portions, make healthier meal choices, cut out the salt and sugar, and eat healthy snacks instead of junk food. Add another twenty minutes to your exercise routine and make sure you are getting mostly cardio to start shedding the pounds before you throw in strength training.

That was super simple, right? Diet isn't working because I'm not losing any weight. Well, another clue your diet isn't working is if you still lack energy. When you start working out and start eating better you should notice that you have more energy as you go along. You wake up easier, you have more stamina during your workouts and you are just more bright and chipper. If this isn't happening it's likely that you aren't making the right food choices or the right exercise choices. Eat smart. That means get plenty of fruits and vegetables. Pick fresh cuts of lean meat and whole grains. Skip on sodium filled processed foods that will just add to your sluggishness. Drink plenty of water and cut down, way down, on the soda. Make sure you don't space your fitness out too much. Only take one day off, not two or more in a row. You need to keep your body thinking that movement is good so it doesn't get beat down and tired again.

When you want to succeed at your diet and actually lose weight, make sure you follow the tips I have expressed in this article. Don't fall for those fad diets. Instead make a commitment to yourself to make a life change that will help you get fit and stay there!
