Two Things to Ask Your Prospective Pet Insurance Company

Evan Nash
When you purchase pet health insurance you should be very aware of the company that you are dealing with and what they are looking for. It is not recommended to simply find the best quote on your possible policy and then move forward with starting your coverage. Just because pet insurance is uncommon doesn't mean it is unimportant. There are at least two things that you should ask any pet insurance company before starting a policy.

** Are the concepts and guidelines in your company designed by business professionals or trained pet professionals? The truth for any good pet health insurance company should be that they employ a little of one and a lot of the other. No good pet insurance business would survive by just hiring people who loved pets, they would need to be business savvy too. So what do you really want to hear?

Your goal should be to hear that there are a good amount of veterinary professionals employed by the company. This is not simply to make sure that there is expertise in the room, but that there are people who can explain why covering one condition over the other is important. If veterinarians are involved in the decision making other veterinarians across the country will tend to believe the company more.

** Do you limit my pet to only a certain ring of veterinarians? Pet health insurance is newer than most forms of insurance and this should be reflected in their decision making ability. It should be obvious that veterinary offices around the country would cooperate with this pet insurance policy and would embrace the claim process. If you are forced to one veterinarian or a few in particular by a pet health insurance policy you should walk away from the company.

If you have the choice of veterinarians and the veterinarians know this they will work harder to gain your business. Any doctor or vet that is automatically given business by an insurance policy will not be thinking of valuing every family pet. Remember, you are paying them for the policy and you should go where you want.

There are obviously a lot of other questions to ask a prospective pet health insurance company, but not asking these two would be just silly. You would be smart to have a pad in front of you with your desired questions before asking for a pet health insurance quote on the phone or on the internet.
