Two Types of Insulation for Open Wall Cavities

Tina Samuels

Insulation is a very cost effective way to reduce air leaks, energy loss, and increase energy efficiency. There are many types of insulation available, but not all are right for specific applications. For those looking over their options for insulating open wall cavities, these two types are some of the most available forms, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Loose Fill Insulation

Loose fill insulation is made from cellulose, mineral wool, or fiberglass. It is the type of insulation that is blown into the open water cavity with equipment specially designed for that reason. Loose fill insulation can also be poured in to the cavities instead of blown in. This type is really good for areas that have an odd share or that have obstructions where regular roll batt insulation could not go. It is also the type of insulation that should be used in areas that are already finished as it is easier to blow insulation into crevices than to rip out walls to use roll insulation.

Sprayed Foam and Foamed In Place Insulation

Sprayed foam and foamed in place insulation is another type that is used to go into open wall cavities. It is made of polyurethan, cementitious, phenolic, or polyisocyanuarate. This type is particularly good for adding insulation into areas that are finished and for areas that are strangely shaped, making other forms of insulation harder to use. Sprayed foam and foamed in place insulation is put in by using small spray containers or it can be put in by a pressure sprayed product for those larger areas. Either way, the fluid comes out of the sprayer and makes a foam upon impact with the surface, sealing off air leaks and energy loss areas.
