Two Ways to Avoid Myspace Hacking

Mark Mielke
Many people, including myself and most members of my family, have profiles on some sort of social networking site. For those of you who don't know, social networking sites are websites where people from any country, state, or city in the world with an internet connection can interact and socialize with other people. One of the most popular social networking site out there is the famous Myspace, which has millions of users worldwide.

Myspace can be a hazard, because, despite warnings and common sense, many people insist on putting their private information on their accounts. This is not safe, as it can be viewed by anyone with a computer. Even if you think the information is set to private and cannot be viewed by others, it is still not safe because Myspace accounts are easy to hack into. Trust me, I know. My account has been hacked several times. But if it is so easy to hack into an account, how are you supposed to protect yourself. Let me tell you a story.

I was on the computer one day and in my boredom I decided to log into my account on Myspace to update my profile. I put in my password and my e-mail address and clicked enter. To my great surprise, it did not let me in, saying to try again. I did try again and it worked. After several incidents like this one, I finally learned what was going on. Hackers were directing me to a fake page that was set up to look like Myspace. When I attempted to log in, I was really giving them my e-mail and password. They could have gotten on to my profile and done anything they wanted to it, which they eventually did. Many people fall for this trick, and it is how the majority of accounts get hacked. To avoid this problem, simply check the url whenever you go to log into Myspace. If it says anything other than www.myspace.com, then you know it's a fake page. When I come across one and I recognize it, I give them fake info and then proceed to log in. If you don't want to give them fake info, just hit the refresh button and it will take you to the real page.

Another way that people unwittingly give others access to their accounts is much easier to avoid. Here is another story. I was at the public library one day and I was just finishing up on Myspace. I clicked the "x" button at the top of the screen and left. The next day, I found that my account had been changed by a prankster and it took me almost two hours to undo the damage he did to my account. I learned that it was not enough to simply "x out" of the internet when I was done. If I just did this, then the next person who tried to access myspace would get onto my account. I have come across this several times before, when people don't properly log out. I always log out for them. This seems like a ridiculous mistake, but many people still continue to make it. That is why I am here. To educate you and make sure that you don't make the same mistakes I did.

These are really the only two things you can do to avoid getting your Myspace account hacked. Police departments and government departments can hack your account anytime they want and it is illegal to try and stop them. Master hackers can also get on any account they want, but, since they are "master" hackers, it is all but impossible to stop them. And, of course, never give your information to anyone online and don't post it on your profile for the world to see. Everything after what I have just told you is pretty much common sense.
