Whenever a musical change occurs in Echoes, there is one on film. This is a fascinating thing to watch and hear. Put on Pink Floyd's song "Echoes" and turn the sound of 2001 down. Cue up Echoes and hit pause, then fast forward 2001 to the end where "Jupiter Beyond the Infinite" is, unpause Echoes right when the caption screen shows up. Here are the similarities:
1) The Whale section of Echoes just when David Bowman moves over the landscape portion of the trip
2) The psychedelic music lasts the same length as the funky space lights section, just like a Pink Floyd concert
3) The whale section ends and keyboards return when the pod parks in the room for the first time.
4) The "victory" part with the guitars comes in when the black-clothed David Bowman comes and makes eye contact with the space-suit David Bowman.
5) The evolution theme of 2001 and in Echoes puts an interesting backdrop to the coincidence. Plus there are lyrical similarities and other sound interactions between song and movie.
The Dark Side of the Moon / Wizard of Oz Sync
For those who have heard the tale of using Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon as a soundtrack to Wizard of Oz but didn't know exactly how to see for yourself, here are the syncing techniques and some of the features you will see.
First to get it setup, get the album to fire right after the MGM lion roars for the third time.
Here are some (by no means all, however) of the incidents:
1) The lyric "balanced on the biggest wave" occurs when Dorothy has her balancing act on the fence
2) The song "On the Run" comes on as Dorothy falls off that fence
3) Chimes and bells occur as the "Witch Lady" appears
4) The tornado is shown in the background as the words "and I'm not frightened of dying"
5)"Great Gig in the Sky" plays as the house is in the sky
6)In the song "Us and Them" the ballerinas enter on "us us us us" and three wise kids enter on " me me me ", "forward he cried" is sang when Dorothy turns forward, "black black black" is sang when the wicked witch appears and "blue blue blue" is sang when Dorothy wears a blue dress.
7) The song "Brain Damage" plays as scarecrow sings "If I only had a Brain"
8) The pulsing heartbeat in album occurs when Dorothy listens for Tinman's heart.
If you allow the CD to repeat about 2 1/2 times and you will have more coincidences.
Interesting side note, the cover of Dark Side of the Moon has a prism, and the song has "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".
If you have never done this it is real cool to see.

Post a CommentI have done another sync, I did animals Pigs (three other ones) with the movie fire in the sky. at the point the ufo shines it light on the guys truck at the railroad crossing...the bass solo at the beginning sets it off...and climaxes when the guy who was abducted is freaking out under the table at a family gathering. Just awesome....why did I do this? bored and out of my mind in college.
Cool. Nothing about Gilmour or Waters surprises me as they are full of imagination and creativity beyond what any of us would ever consider the norm, but you gotta luv em'.
Great idea for an article. I've done both, but found few people know about the 2001 sync. Rentals should soar after this article.
I have always heard people talking about this stuff, but now I'm gonna try it Thanks!
Great description; I'd always heard of doing that but never tried it because I didn't know how! Thanks.
Haha that is so neat! I've never heard of such a thing :) Thanks! When I get enough money for a tele I'll give it a go :)
Cool! I'll check it out. I've done the Wizard of OZ, but havent tried the 2001. thanks!
