I think she has a right to ask that her daughters not be commercialized. I think that Ty Incorporated's stance that the dolls Marvelous Malia and Sweet Sasha are not named after the Obama girls is pure bull. Actually it is an outright lie and I think these dolls should be boycotted and that the Ty Company should offer the Obamas an apology after removing them from shelves.
Statistically the odds that the names of these dolls are coincidentally named after the Obama girls is zero. Malia isn't a common name and for that matter neither is Sasha. Along with the names themselves the fact they are sisters and happen to be the daughters of the President of the United States just adds to the statistical significance of this not possibly being a coincidence. On top of that Ty says the resemblance is a coincidence as well!
Ty Inc. is the Beanie Baby company. Certainly they don't need the money and money they will make. The dolls are part of the company's Ty Girlz collection and sell for $9.99. That's a reasonable amount and I'd buy them myself if the circumstances were different. I'd buy them for my children if I had young ones.
The senior Vice President of sales said they didn't ask or get permission to use the Obama girls' images. The VP later said that they weren't even based on the sisters...hmmm.. Sounds fishy to me.
These girls ages 10 and 7 are little girls. They didn't volunteer for this job. They didn't seek out modeling careers. They deserve their privacy if their mom wants that which she does. I respect her even more than I did if that is possible. She's a fantastic mom and others should take heed of how she parents.
There are dolls of color on the market if that is what parents want to buy. Ty didn't find a niche that didn't exist. They just found a niche that if continued will turn into a lot of money. If they do not take them off the shelves the right thing would be for Ty to give them money they made off the sales of the President's children to a charity such as UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund). That would be wonderful publicity for them and role modeling President Obama's quest for service from us.
In respect to Mrs. Obama's feelings pictures of these dolls will not be published on my essay.

Post a CommentIt's one thing to make dolls of Obama and his wife, but it's not cool to make the kids into dolls.
Kristy - I'm gullible but this is beyond gullible!
I guess they think they will sell more dolls by doing this....but I agree we should let Obama have some privacy.
I talked with my husband about it. He told me that it was statistically impossible. He's a numbers guy. Then he read the article and was playing devil's advocate - "Well there are Obama bobbleheads" but when we talked about the fact that these were children and shouldn't be exploited he agreed. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.
I agree with Rae Lynn...Nice article here.
I agree I think they are full of bull too, it is just way to coincidental, especially that they came out together at the same time. They even look like the girls. I can't believe they are being so blatantly dishonest. They should have tried to get the Obama's permission before making dolls of their daughters.
