Tybee Island, Georgia has a considerable amount to offer visitors, including hotels, eateries, an old historic fort which includes a lighthouse, and plenty of shopping for the shopaholics among us. And don't forget that it has an absolutely beautiful beach as well. Although Tybee Island is an island, there is no need to worry about taking a boat across the water to get to it.A bridge connects Tybee Island to Savannah, Georgia, making it easy to drive out to the island on Highway 80 if you prefer to stay on the mainland.
However, for those that don't want to make the commute back and forth unless needed, Tybee Island has a couple of hotel options. One of them is the Ocean Plaza, and it is one of the few hotels in the area that has direct access to the beach. It is also placed within easy walking distance of the shops and a Subway, which makes it a pleasant place to stay. There's no need to worry that you won't be able to find a parking place at the beach when you stay there and would like to visit the beach at the busiest time of day, or night. Food, shopping, and a beach; nothing better than that.
For those that like to shop, the shops on Tybee Island have something to offer everyone. An entire block is lined with nothing but shops where you can find all kinds of interesting things including, but not limited to; clothes, swimsuits, towels, boogie boards, shoes, jewelry, nick-knacks, even hermit crabs. It is almost surprising what one can find tucked away in some of those little stores, it definitely makes looking an enjoyable experience.
Once out on the beach, the dominating feature is a long boardwalk that goes out about a quarter of a mile into the ocean. When the tide is out, you're walking mostly across the beach, but once the tide is in, you're walking almost completely over the water. At the end of the boardwalk, you can stand and look out on the ocean, and boats when they are out, in the distance, or you can rent fishing gear and fish, though it is usually pretty busy if you want to try that. On the shore end of the boardwalk, there is a huge open sided pavilion with benches scattered around. You can buy a drink if you wish, or just sit and listen to oldies music being played while you enjoy the breeze.Overall, Tybee Island, Georgia is a pleasant place to spend a summer vacation lazing out on the sand or exploring quaint shops, maybe even climbing to the top of a lighthouse to see the ocean from up high. And if that isn't enough to hold your attention, you can always make the drive back into Savannah, Georgia and spend some of your time there. Both places are beautiful and offer you plenty to do.

Post a CommentI would love to visit Tybee Island one day.
Sounds like a great place to visit.
My apologies. I didn't catch the Interstate/Highway when I was editing, and I agree. I should have used a better description of the bridge. I've never stayed at the DeSoto Hotel, but have at the Ocean Plaza. I'll need to recheck their information, because I recall it saying that they were the only hotel with direct beach access. Again, thank you, and my apologies.
Nice article, although there are some inaccuracies:
1. Highway 80 connecting Savannah to Tybee is NOT an Interstate. There are several bridges along the way--'huge bridge' would not be the best description of any of them.
2. The Ocean Plaza Hotel is NOT the only hotel having direct beach access. The DeSoto Hotel actually has direct beach access, whereas the Ocean Plaza is across a large parking lot from the beach.
If you're going to write a feature about a destination such as Tybee Island, please be accurate.
