Tylenol for Arthritis: a Product Review

A Brewster Smythe
Tylenol Arthritis has been my pain reliever of choice since I realized interaction challenges with other medications. I found that other pain relievers like Aleve, and Advil interacted with my high blood pressure medications.

Unfortunately, most doctors don't ask you what kind of over the counter drugs you take. On the whole, they don't really pay much attention to the prescription drugs you take either. But, that is another article. The pharmacist cannot be aware of your pain relievers of choice when filling the prescription drugs that the doctor prescribes, without you volunteering this information. The patient must be their own health care advocate.

I found out through experience that Aleve interacted with my high blood pressure medicine by actually taking a stronger prescribed medication of the same ingredients. I had had a rousing exercise session at the gym. I am not getting any younger and the joints were screaming out for relief. I made a visit to my doctor who prescribed a strong medication. That night my heart began to do the jitterbug as I watched my favorite shows on Soapnet.

This is when I realized that I had been experiencing the same heart palpitations with Aleve - a milder form of the prescription drug.

Those of us who have heart, blood pressure and high cholesterol conditions must always be aware that various over the counter drugs will interact with the prescription drugs we take on a consistent basis. Often, this can become known by warnings on the boxes of the over the counter drugs. Other times it becomes known when the reactions set in. These reactions should not be ignored. Although, I have often ignored them. So, do a lot of other people. I know this, because others have confided in me. With a flip of their hand, the comment is; "Sure, I have some side effects, but if it works, who cares?" Sometimes these warnings are not read or go unheeded. Or taken seriously. This is a serious subject. Take these side effects, seriously.

Now, I take Tylenol for Arthritis. It takes care of the pain, and does not produce heart palpitations. When I say it takes care of the pain, I want to qualify that by stating that the pain is reduced. Tylenol for Arthritis does not reduce my pain as well as Aleve. When I used Aleve the pain was eliminated within two hours - and stayed away. Tylenol for Arthritis does not produce that effect. But, a person does not have to worry about interactions.

My most important lesson throughout the Aleve situation was to make sure your pharmacist knows what over the counter drugs you are taking. Most of the time a pharmacist has this kind of information at their fingertips.
