Stop Taking Them

Here we go again, another recall. This one caught my eye because all I saw was Tylenol. I take two Tylenol PM's every night so I had to find out more. Luckily the recall does not cause a problem for me, but please read on if you use Tylenol for arthritis pain, with the red cap.

Johnson and Johnson, out of New Brunswick, New Jersey, has issued a recall for their Tylenol Arthritis caplets. The have recalled all product lots of the Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count bottles with the red EZ-open cap. Only the bottles with the red EZ-open cap are in question.

It seems that some time last month consumers complained that the Tylenol Arthritis caplets had a strong somewhat musty smell. The smell resulted in several consumers complaining of stomach pain and vomiting. At that point in time Johnson and Johnson recalled 5 lots of the product.

What is the strange smell? The pharmco said the odor is due to trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. That chemical may have come as a result of the breakdown of another chemical. That chemical is used to treat wooden pallets that transport and store packaging materials. Those wooden pallets are used to store lots of products, just look at the back of any large store and you will see hundreds of those pallets. What else could possibly be contaminated?

How will J & J solve the problem? They have stopped production at their current facility and are manufacturing the Tylenol Arthritis caplets at a different location and should be back to normal in January.

Consumers seeking a refund or replacement can call J&J at 1-888-222-6036. Additional information on the recall can be found on-line at Tylenol's website. If you have these caplets in your medicine cabinet, your desk drawer, your car, any place you keep medications - put them away, call the above phone number for a refund.

Click here for the Tylenol website. According to the site this is voluntary recall. Johnson and Johnson is doing the right thing. The Tylenol site has a list of all the lot numbers involved. If you are unsure if your bottle could be tainted, check the website, there is also a very clear photo of the bottle.

To reiterate, Johnson and Johnson, the pharmaceutical giant, has recalled their Tylenol Arthritis caplets, 100 count bottle with the red ex-open cap. That is the only Tylenol product involved in the recall.
