Types of Depression Treatment

Depression treatment varies depending on what a person is willing to do in order to get help for their disorder. Because so many people around the world are affected with one of the different types of depression, treatments are abundant. Types of depression treatment include medications, herbal therapies, and psychotherapies. Along with the input of a doctor, an individual can chose the right treatment based on what is needed for that particular person.

One of the main types of depression treatment commonly used is medication. Several types of medications are available to treat a depressive disorder. The three main types of drug categories that doctors prescribe are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the tricyclics, and the monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). A doctor may sometimes combine a variety of these antidepressants before finding the right combination for an individual. One thing that people must remember is that with this depression treatment, the full therapeutic effects will sometimes not be felt for as long as eight weeks.

Another type of depression treatment that is causing the medical community to raise its eyebrows with concern is herbal therapies. One of the best known herbal therapies for depression is St. John's Wort. The National Institute of Health conducted a three year study on the effects of St. John's Wort and major depression. In the course of the study, over 350 people were given this herb for depression treatment. This treatment for depression was found to not support its proclaimed use for major depression; however, the NIH is now looking at this popular herb for treatment of mild forms of depression. The results of that study are not readily available to the public as of yet.

One of the last and most effective forms of depression treatment is psychotherapies. Psychotherapies are when individuals and medical professionals talk to help a patient "gain insight into and resolve their problems through verbal exchange with the therapist, sometimes combined with 'homework' assignments between sessions". By talking, a person can unlearn a certain behavioral pattern that may have helped them become depressed in the first place.

Depending on the person, a medical professional may prescribe a variety of types of depression treatment in order to ensure a person's recovery from a depressive order. A medical professional may combine various treatments in order to maximize the results desired. Depression is treatable. If a person has a good support system, their recovery time can be cut in half. The main thing to remember when treating a depressive disorder is that the person who is ill must be willing to cooperate and get help otherwise all the various types of depression treatment will not help.
