Types of Non-Flowering Plants

Overview of Non-Flowering Plants

DiDi
These are the kind of flowers that do not bear flowers hence living organisms which lack the power of locomotion. The following are some examples of non flowering plants: fungi, conifer trees, mosses, lichens and algae.

Fungi
Fungi are main component of lichens that lack the green pigment chlorophyll, which is used by green plants to convert sunlight into food. They re produced by means of spores and never produce flowers or seeds. They lack true stem and leaves hence do not have a vascular system like that of a true plant .e .g Mushrooms.

Conifer trees
Conifer trees are examples of non flowering plants that have needle like leaves and are usually evergreen (they do not loose their leaves in autumn) these plants do not produce flowers but have 'cones' instead. Their seeds are formed inside the female cones.

Bryophytes (Mosses)
Mosses are types of non flowering plants which are small and simple plants that need a lot of water to live because they do not have many roots. That is why they produce spores instead of flowers.

Lichens
These are flat structures which adhere to and grow directly on rocks and trees, they are rootless hence they obtain their water from the atmosphere and are liable to atmospheric pollution. Lichens intend to grow best in unpolluted air.

Algae
Algae are non flowering plants usually found in damp places or water. Thus they are commonly found in terrestrial as well as aquatic environments, the terrestrial algae are usually inconspicuous and common in moist, tropical regions and dry areas since they lack vascular tissues and other adaptations to live on land.
