Online continuing education options for health care workers can differ significantly. These differences can be due to the job title that you hold, whether or not your employer works with a company that provides continuing education units, commonly called CEU's, and the type of education that is needed. In most cases, these services are provided for a fee and you should consider the different models which may be available before deciding on any particular provider of online continuing education units. Continuing education for health care workers is not only for the employer, but is also required when renewing your license.

Employer Sponsored

Some employers will provide health care workers with a list of specific institutions that provides this type of online education. However, the employer is not required to do this. The benefit of obtaining health care CEU's through an employer recommended institution usually includes a discount. These companies may partner or contract with the hospital or place of business to bring lower costs to the health care personnel. In addition, online education options for health care workers such as this will almost always fulfill requirements mandated for licensure in that particular state of practice. Depending on your employer, some may actually be able to provide the employee with continuing education without the help of an outside source.

Local Colleges and Universities

Local colleges and universities will often offer both online continuing education units and traditional styles of meeting in person. If the post secondary institution is affiliated with the employer or you are alumni, you may also be eligible for a discount on these services. These classes are typically quite affordable anyway and will also provide a certificate of training once the CEU's have been completed. These types of educational programs are almost always accepted by the state and will count towards fulfilling licensure requirements.

Independent Institutional Credits

You should always exercise caution when considering online continuing education options such as this. Not only can some of these be expensive, but some will not fulfill the requirements in certain states of practice. These are usually independent organizations that bombard the web and try to solicit your business. Although there are legitimate independent CEU providers, you should always inquire about the institutions accreditation. Your local board of practice, be it nursing or what have you, should have a list of organizations with approved continuing education curriculum.

These are the most common options that the health care worker will have concerning completion of his or her continuing education. To find the best deals and ensure that you are receiving the units needed, always take the time to check with your employer and the state board. This can save you time, money and a lot of hassle down the road.
