Types of Roofing Materials and Their Pros and Cons

Scott Kessman

The different types of roofing materials available today can be confusing to choose from. In this brief the homeowner will have a fair idea of the pros and cons associated with different roofing materials.

First consideration should be given to the general weather pattern of the area when choosing the types of roofing materials that would be suitable. If the area is prone to rainy weather, it would be wise to choose durable roofing materials. Starting off with asphalt shingles; these are traditional shingles available in many colors; and can be organic or fiberglass. Asphalt shingles can be inexpensive, but the more expensive architectural roof shingles can be quite costly.

The range of qualities is wide. Advantages of asphalt shingles are that they are fireproof and simple to repair. Disadvantages are the fact that these shingles are magnets for mold and mildew, and usually do not last longer than thirty years. Metal roofing on the other hand, made from aluminum, copper and steel; are light and friendly to the environment. Because metal roofing is so durable it has a life of about fifty years. The disadvantages of metal roofing are that they are not easy to install, and have to be painted often. In addition, this form of roofing is very expensive.

Wooden roofing looks stylish and can last long if well taken care of; the downside is that it is very expensive to buy and needs to be installed by a professional. Besides, wooden shingles rot and attract mold and mildew very quickly. Tile roofing is beautiful and durable, however they are expensive and need to be regularly maintained. Despite their durability against weather, tiles can break if walked upon. Slate roofing is perhaps the best of all types of roofing materials; they are durable and last a lifetime.

The high cost of slate roofing materials and the high cost of installing them may discourage one from considering them high on the list. Concrete roofing comes in various colors and shapes it is easy to maintain and inexpensive when compared to other known roofing materials. There is a little-known roofing material called engineered roofing materials that are attractive and light in weight, as well as highly durable. The disadvantage is that there are very few references one can use to find out more about them.

From the pros and cons described for the different types of roofing materials available, it is possible for one to make an informed decision on the kind of roofing material that will best suit the weather of the area, as well as the available budget.
