Conversion vans are more like an auto than an RV camper. They can be very useful for family travel. These vehicles will generally offer sleeping for about 2 people. They do not have cooking or bathroom facilities. One idea for using them is to also have a fold up camper. Then these will offer additional and private sleeping space. They often come with video and stereo systems already installed. They are good for a couple or to use as additional space for other small campers.
Another type of small RV camper is the truck camper. These are put on top of your pickup truck and secured to the chassis. When using this type of camper, the tailgate of the truck will have to be removed. These campers come with jacks to keep them level when they are not on the truck. These can be used for storage or if you prefer to take the camper off of the truck at the campsite.
Truck campers are built to take advantage of all the space available. Most will have cooking and sleeping areas. Some even have bathroom facilities. There are many sizes and floor plans for you to choose from.
One of the disadvantages of the truck campers is they are top heavy. The driver of the truck will need to be very careful when turning tight curves, driving in windy conditions, slippery conditions, and uneven road surfaces. However, once the drive is accustomed to driving this type of RV camper, they will not think twice about it. Another item to think about is gas mileage. Adding a camper on top of the truck will make the gas mileage drop tremendously. However, you will still save over staying in a motel.
There are some RV campers that share the features of foldups and truck campers. These have lower profile while traveling. When you get to your destination they can be raised and provide more room. This will reduce the weight of the camper and also the wind resistance. Both of these factors will help with gas mileage.
An excellent choice for travelers new to RV campers is the foldup camper. These fold down to a very small size and are pulled behind a vehicle. If you plan to purchase one of these, be sure the vehicle you plan to pull it with is up to the job. These RV campers are light weight compared to others, but there is still a bit of weight to pull.
Foldup RV campers are much easier to store and maintain than the larger campers. They are also much easier to get into remote areas because of their size. Awnings and screen rooms are available to add onto your foldup camper to add a bit more room and convenience. And, air conditioning units are available, also. The biggest drawback of this type of camper is that they are not good for winter camping. They are also not very good in high winds. Their light weight makes them easier to blow around.
Purchasing a smaller RV camper will help you save money. And, if you can find a used camper to purchase, that is even better. Hopefully, this information will help you decide what type of small RV camper is best for you.
