Types of Sprinklers

Sprinklers are a necessary part of a lawn and garden maintenance system. To choose the right sprinkler type, assess the size of the space that needs to be watered, as well as the frequency of use. The geographical location of your home is key to choosing the right sprinkler type as well; for example, warmer climates may necessitate a powerful sprinkler for a more thorough watering than cooler environments.

Fixed Spray Head Sprinklers

According to Grounds Maintenance Magazine, spray heads are among the most commonly used sprinkler types for residential areas. This sprinkler type is characterized by a small, cylinder shape and may be stationary or pop up out of the ground. They are less expensive than many other sprinkler types and spray out a large amount of water quickly. Water spray patterns include full, half and quarter circles and distribute water within an 18 foot radius.

Rotor-Style Sprinklers: Impact

One of the main varieties of rotary sprinklers is the impact sprinkler. Impact sprinklers work by moving water back and forth over the coverage area. They are one of the more recognizable sprinkler types, as it shoots out bursts of water and makes a distinguishable sound as it operates; it is what many people often associate with the sound of a sprinkler. This sprinkler type also distributes water in full, half and quarter circle patterns. However, according to the Utah Division of Water Resources, the rotary sprinkler application is more balanced than stationary sprinkler types.

Rotor-Style Sprinklers: Gear Driven

Gear-driven rotary sprinklers are quieter than impact sprinklers, according to Grounds Maintenance Magazine, and are more inconspicuous and low-maintenance than impact sprinklers. The design of this sprinkler type prevents dirt and other stray lawn materials from reaching the sprinkler drive mechanism, which is the reason it is easier to maintain. According to the Irrigation Tutorials website, the most cosmetically-appealing of gear driven sprinklers are multi-stream rotors, which shoot out numerous streams of water -- one at a time -- across your lawn or garden.

Sprinkler Type Considerations

The most important consideration in choosing a sprinkler type is to research various types and cross-match them with your needs. For example, according to Irrigation Tutorials, if the area to be watered spans 15 to 28 feet, then a rotary sprinkler may be the best choice for your yard. If you are unsure of what sprinkle type is best, then Grounds Maintenance Magazine suggests a consultation with an irrigation specialist to properly educate you on your options. Once you've chosen a sprinkler, routinely check it during the daytime hours to inspect for cracks or clogs around the head.
