U. S. Air Force Facts

Previously a Part of the Army

Janice Villa
On September 18th, 2007, the United States Air Force will celebrate 60 years as a branch of the military. The United States Air Force became a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947. The Air Force was previously a part of the United States Army. My father- in- law entered the Air Force during this time period. He is the youngest person ever to enlist in the United States Air Force at the age of 14 years old. He was a migrant worker and he wanted to join the Air Force to better his life and send money home to his parents. He made the Air Force his career, retiring after 21 1/2 years. He is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He is currently writing a story about his life in the Air Force. Here are some facts about the Air Force and basic training.

A total of 346,166 people are serving in active duty, with 106,000 in the Air National Guard and 78,426 in the Air Force Reserves. (according to 2006 figures)

The Air Force is 80% male and 20% female. 75% of those people identify themselves as white, 15% as black and 9% as Hispanic.

In 2006, 35,872 people entered basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio,Texas. Lackland was nicknamed, "Gateway to the Air Force." All Air Force basic training is done there. Most will become a part of the Air Force. Other soldiers will serve in the Air Force Reserves or the Air National Guard.

Trainees range in age from 17 to 35 years of age. The average age is 20. Older trainees are usually part of the reserves or the guard.

Cost to train and outfit an airman is $35,000.00.

Basic training lasts 6 1/2 weeks. It will be expanded to 8 1/2 weeks in November of 2008.

Over the last 60 years, basic training has ranged in length from 2 to 13 weeks.

More than seven million Airmen have completed basic military training since 1946.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aviation branch of the U.S. armed forces. The mission of the USAF is "to defend the United States and protect its interests through air and space power".

USAF Core Values :
Integrity First
Service Before Self
Excellence in All We Do

Congratulations United States Air Force!
