Bono has been released from Ludwig Maximilians-University (LMU) Hospital in Munich and is under doctor's orders to start a rehabilitation program for at least eight weeks. The doctors' statements, as posted on U2.com, explain the nature of the injury that caused the sudden operation. It was described as a severe compression of the sciatic nerve caused by a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc. It is likely that at least part of that injury is longstanding since the frontman has suffered with back pain for several years after falling off a stage. It had progressed to cause partial paralysis and, during the surgery, it was found that fragments of the affected disc had traveled into the spinal canal.
Doctors said that conservative treatment was not an option. However, the operation has resulted in full restoration of motor skills at this time. Doctors believe that, after extended treatment and recuperation, the use of these skills will become more permanent than would be the case if treatment did not continue. They also stressed that "In our experience, this (the eight week time of recovery) is the minimum time."
In view of this, U2.com announced that 16 shows on the U2360 Tour from Salt Lake City on June 3rd, through to New Jersey's Meadowlands Stadium on July 19th has been postponed. Live Nation is now working to reschedule those dates in 2011.
U2 manager Paul McGuinness said: "Our biggest and I believe best tour has been interrupted and we're all devastated. For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow. He feels robbed of the chance to do what he does best and feels like he has badly let down the band and their audience. Which is of course nonsense. His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono make a full recovery."
Ticket holders are being encouraged to hold on to those tickets until the rescheduled dates are announced and further information is given.
