Ubaldo Jimenez Pitches Historic No Hitter

Jimenez Pitches Rockies First No Hitter Ever, Positions Himself for All-Star Game and Cy Young

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched a no hitter against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. Not only was the no hitter the first of the 26 year old Jimenez major league career, it was the first no hitter pitched in the major leagues this season, and the first no hitter pitched by a Colorado Rockies pitcher in the club's history. The no hit shutout positions Jimenez as an early contender to both make the All-Star team and win the Cy Young Award. However, it is only mid April and there is a lot of baseball still to be played.

Jimenez's Historic Day

Ubaldo's day was historic because the right hander pitched a no hitter. Ubaldo Jimenez cemented his place in Colorado Rockies history. The AP reported on Fox Sports "Ubaldo Jimenez pitched the first no-hitter in the Colorado Rockies' 18-year history." The no hitter was the first of the 2010 Major League Baseball season so Jimenez also leaves his mark on the history of the 2010 baseball season. It was also the first no hitter since Mark Buehrle pitched his perfect game on July 23, 2009.

Early Contender for an All-Star Spot and Cy Young Award?

It is the middle of April and there is a lot more baseball to be played even before the All-Star game and that is about the midway point of the season. However, these games do count and the stats are recorded. Ubaldo Jimenez is 3-0 with a 1.29 earned run average according to Fox Sports. At this rate he is on pace to go 44-0. He won't go 44-0, however he does have a great start. Jimenez went 15-12 last season. A twenty win season could be in reach. The no hitter will separate him from other pitchers. He All-Star game is in reach, and for now he is a front runner for the Cy Young Award. Ubaldo will need to continue to win and will need the support of the Colorado Rockies to get those wins.

Conclusion:

Over all Saturday was a great day for Ubaldo Jimenez. The pitcher who made is debut in 2006 pitched his first no hitter, the Rockies first no hitter ever, and the first no hitter of the 2010 season. Jimenez has positioned himself well to make the All-Star team and possibly win the Cy Young Award. However, he will have to continue to pitch great to make those things happen. We will also need help from his team and have some lucky breaks along the way.

I just love your reporting. So knowledgable. I love sports too and your passion for the game is obvious. This one when I say the score stunned me. To be honest I hadn't heard of him before, but I get the feeling we will all be hearing about him in the future. Great reporting Mike.
