Ubuntu Linux: What the Popular Open Source Operating System Has to Offer

Why Ubuntu is a Viable Operating System for the Home PC User

The Armchair Geek
Ubuntu Linux is a popular, open source, linux-based operating system. Ubuntu serves as an affordable alternative to the more popular Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Contrary to popular belief, Ubuntu is very similar to the other two operating systems. With Ubuntu, you have the ability to surf the web, read email, create documents and spreadsheets, edit videos, play video-games, and do a whole lot of the things a typical operating system is able to do.

What Does Ubuntu Have to Offer?
Ubuntu also comes prepackaged with a complete office suite called OpenOffice. OpenOffice comes complete with a word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation creator.
*The word processor has everything you would expect from Microsoft Word. The word processor has a Wizard for easy use and step-by-step instructions.
*The spreadsheet on Ubuntu is very similar to Microsoft Excel. The spreadsheet has a lot of advanced functions that allow it to perform complicated operations and calculations.
*The presentation manager is Ubuntu's version of PowerPoint. Presentation has the ability to create 2D and 3D clip art that makes presentations stand out better.
*Ubuntu also includes a program called Tomboy. Tomboy is a note-taking program that allows users to jot down notes on your desktop in order to organize ideas and concepts. *Ubuntu even comes packaged with the Firefox web browser. Firefox is considered one of the most secure web browsers on the market because of its encryption abilities. Firefox is even considered more reliable than the popular Internet Explorer.

Ubuntu also has excellent multimedia capabilities. You can easily import and edit photos from a camera, hard drive, iPod, or other device into your computer and edit them with the photo editing program known as F-spot. You can resize, crop, and adjust color settings with F-spot.

Ubuntu also comes with a unique music player, Rhythmbox. Rhythmbox allows users to listen to music files and Internet radio. Totem is the video player included in Ubuntu, which is used to view videos and DVDs.

Ubuntu is obviously a viable operating system as it has many of the features of the popular retail operating systems, Windows and Mac OS. Some may even say that Ubuntu may overtake Windows in the future because it is an open source program and it keeps getting upgraded every two or so months. Ubuntu can also be considered much more efficient than other operating systems because of the fact that it's free and has less system requirements. If you are looking for something outside the niche of Microsoft or Apple, the Ubuntu operating system is highly recommended.
