Ubuntu Linux Versus Windows Vista - How Do They Compare?
Which of the New Operating Systems Has the Best of the Features You Need?
Many fans of Linux strongly believe that Ubuntu is a much better system than the Windows operating systems, particularly Windows Vista. On the other hand, Microsoft fans strongly feel that Windows Vista is the more powerful and efficient operating system.
Installation
Ubuntu and Windows Vista both have the same basic installation procedure: just insert the disk and follow the instructions. Ubuntu, however, has a slightly easier installation procedure. Before you completely install Ubuntu, you are able to evaluate the operating system in "live CD" mode. This allows you to make sure your system is fully compatible with Ubuntu. Windows Vista has no such feature.
Hardware management
Ubuntu uses the Removable Drives and Media Preferences window to manage all hardware on the computer. While this method is much easier than previous Linux distributions, Windows is much easier because it uses the Device Manager. The Device Manager feature contains a list of all the hardware installed on the computer and you can disable and enable specific devices. This process is much easier than Ubuntu's Removable Drives and Media Preferences windows because all of the information is found in one place.
Software
The software installation for both operating systems is almost identical. Windows uses the Add/Remove Programs window, while Ubuntu uses Add/Remove Applications and the Synaptic Package manager. In terms of web browsing and email management, Windows has the upper hand, because Windows Mail has a multitude of features that are easy to use, which Ubuntu does not offer.
Internet Browsers
On the other hand, Firefox is the default operating system in Ubuntu and it is considered much more secure and reliable than Internet Explorer.
Even though Ubuntu is a competent operating system, I would say that Windows Vista is the better operating system overall. For one, Windows Vista is the standard in office and home settings and it is much more easier to use. Ubuntu makes a very strong effort at being more user-friendly than previous Linux distributions, but Windows Vista is far much easier because of most people's familiarity with its programs and applications.

Post a CommentDid you just say Windows _VISTA_ is better than Ubuntu? There's a difference here. You can INSTALL SOFTWARE FROM THE SOFTWARE CENTER *AND* REMOVE IT FROM THE SOFTWARE CENTER!! On Windows Vista if you install some software, hope it puts it in the _SLOOOWWWWWW_ add/remove programs doohicky and hope it removes properly!
You haven't even TRIED Ubuntu, Gosh! You just (as some other guy said) raid the wikipedia article or something!
Sorry people, but this site just lost all credibility in my mind. I won't be coming back to this site again. Besides, it's by Yahoo, the giant steaming turd of the internet.
Wow. The writer of the article likely went to the Ubuntu wikipedia and looked at what you could do with it.
Next time, do some more research.
(By the Way, adding software to Ubuntu is much more easier because a lot of software is contained in the repositories.)
This is the most stupid comparison I have read. Ubuntu linux is better for 500 reasons.
Please do more research before posting articles. Ubuntu comes standard with Evolution email, one of the most powerful email programs there is period. And Firefox is not he default operating system, it is the default web browser. Not to mention saying that windows is better because it is more familiar would mean that you still walk everywhere because those "car" things are unfamiliar. I admit Ubuntu takes some getting used to, but once you do you'll come to regard your computer they way you do your TV or microwave. It's there and it does what you need it to without all the "necessary" problems most people accept from Windows.
