What is Cloud Computing?
The term has been used a lot on recent years: cloud computing. It sounds like a complicated techno term that only computer geeks would understand. But the fact is many non-geek computer users already use a form of cloud computing to complete their tasks and to transfer information to other computer users. They are just not aware that they are working in the computer cloud.
Online applications like Google Docs, Flickr, and Facebook are used by Internet surfers who are oblivious to being in the cloud. These online services are a recognized form of cloud computing that allows users transfer files and information to people across the globe. With these cloud computing services users can collaborate on projects and modify information, whether it be documents, images, Internet content, or spreadsheet files.
Most of these services work well no matter whether you are running Windows, Mac OSX, or Ubuntu as your main operating system. The synchronization takes place automatically under the operating system layer. The computer can communicate and work with each other, despite their different operating systems.
There is a new cloud computing service that rolls many of the great features of some of the larger services that Google offer. Ubuntu, with the support of Canonical unveiled the Ubuntu Once service last year. Ubuntu One allows Linux users the opportunity to sync their personal files to other computers across the Internet. At first, Ubuntu One only worked with computers running Ubuntu. But now you can stream files to smart devices, like the Android and iPhone. You will also be able to sync files between a Windows 7 and Ubuntu PC in the near future.
Cloud Computing with Ubuntu One
Ubuntu One allows any Ubuntu user access to a server that allows them to store up to 2 GB of on line storage. A small program runs on your Ubuntu Desktop that automatically syncs files whenever a change is detected. The Ubuntu one service also allows sharing of files between different users. The allows users to collaborate their work files on the computing cloud.
Stream Music with Ubuntu One
You can also sync your music library onto Ubuntu One that is rolled into a service called Ubuntu One Mobile . You can then stream music to any smart phone running Android or Apple's iOS. You can stream an unlimited number of hours to your smart phone. The service only costs $3.99 per month. An extra 20 GB of storage space is available for an additional fee of $2.99. You can add as much storage needed in 20 GB increments. You will likely need the extra storage if you plan to add a music library to Ubuntu One.
Syncing Files with Windows and Ubuntu One
For now, client software for Ubuntu One is not available for computers running Windows 7. However, an Ubuntu One for Windows Beta is under development. This will allow Windows computers to be able to sync with Ubuntu PC, expanding the Ubuntu One cloud.
With Ubuntu, personal file sharing is easy. The Ubuntu One software installs by default with the Ubuntu operaint system. All you have to do to get your Ubuntu One service rolling is to open an account and then you can start to share some of your personal files to other devices that you may have connected to the Internet.
