For those that missed Game 1 of the 2010 Softball Championship Series, you may have missed one of the best softball games we have seen in years. That sentiment is probably not shared by fans of Arizona, though, who saw their team fall to UCLA in extra innings. They would still have to admit that the drama that played out on Monday set the stage for some exciting softball, though. UCLA had a 2-1 lead until the fifth inning, when Arizona put a run across, and the score moved to 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. UCLA went for two runs, and a 4-2 lead heading into the final inning seemed like a recipe for a UCLA victory. However, Arizona scored three runs in the top of seventh inning to take a one-run lead.
UCLA came up in the bottom of the seventh inning needing at least one run to tie and that is exactly what they got, sending the game into extra innings. Arizona couldn't score in their half, but that set up some immense drama for the UCLA offense. With two outs and a 1-0 count, Langenfeld came up to bat and launched one that went for a UCLA Bruins game-winning home run. She was mobbed at home plate by her teammates, and UCLA took the one game lead in the 2010 Softball Championship Series. Now UCLA can end the 2010 softball season with another victory on Tuesday, or Arizona could even the series and force a tie-breaker on Wednesday, June 9th. Matching up two of the best schools when it comes to softball has already created a great College World Series conclusion, but maybe these two teams have even more to offer us on Tuesday night.
UCLA vs. Arizona Game 2 is set for Tuesday, June 8th at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) on ESPN2.
