Udonis Haslem of the Miami Heat Arrested for Drug Possession

Will This Hurt the Chances of Lebron James Winning a Championship

NBC Sports and CNN report that Udonis Haslem, a teammate of Lebron James on the Miami Heat, has been arrested for possession of illegal drugs, possibly marijuana. He was stopped by the Florida Patrol for a traffic violation. This is the first time Haslem has been arrested for a drug violation. Udonis Haslim was also sited for speeding and having an illegal tint on his windows. He likely will not face any suspension from the NBA, because this is his first drug infraction. However, it is likely that Udonis Haslem will face some sort of drug suspension.

This is an unfortunate situation, since Udonis Haslem is a long time member of the Miami Heat, having played there since the 2003 season. Although Udonis is not a superstar like Lebron James, he has served as a core part of the Heat's team for the past 6 seasons. In the past he complemented Shaquille O'Neil's style of play, and Miami Heat fans will hope that Udonis Haslem will continue to play a supporting role for the team as it makes a run for the NBA championship.

Udonis Haslem averaged between 7 and 9 rebounds per game and has scored about 10 points per game, since he made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2003. After attaining modest success as an NBA player, he has since turned down big money offers to play elsewhere in the league so that he could stay and play in Miami. This places him in prime position to win a championship with Lebron James, Jermaine O'Neal, and Chris Bosh.

Recently, the Sun Sentinel reported that the mother of Udonis Haslem passed away from cancer at the age of 53. Although estranged from his mother while he was growing up, Udonis Haslem reconciled with his mother in 2001. It was reported that Haslem has a great love for his family and wanted to stay in the Miami area to be closer to his family.
