What Will it Take for Carwin and Lesnar to Meet Again?

Their first UFC 116 matchup was one of the best fights of the year as the Shane Carwin vs. Lesnar fight sold a ton of pay-per-views and had fans on the edge of their seats.

Now, many fans are wondering if the two former NCAA wrestling champions Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar will ever meet again in the UFC's famed Octagon.

Unfortunately for those hoping for a rematch of their UFC 116 clash, in which Lesnar staged a furious comeback to win by an arm triangle, a lot has to happen first before we see this matchup again.

Lesnar is slotted to face Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 and then after that, Junior dos Santos is officially next in line to take on the winner.

The Shane Carwin vs. Lesnar fight would probably only occur within the next year or so if Lesnar were to lose to Velasquez. Carwin hasn't had an opponent named yet, however, so he could have one lined up by the UFC before then.

Some fans wanted an immediate rematch between Lesnar and Carwin but that was not an option considering Velasquez had been waiting in the wings for so long following his big win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 110.

Did Carwin deserve the rematch? Considering that other fighters have been given immediate rematches having done less, perhaps he did. Carwin had Lesnar battered and bruised on the ground and some thought the fight should have been stopped as he was grounding and pounding Lesnar.

But the Shane Carwin vs. Lesnar fight turned out to be officiated the right way as the fight was allowed to continue and Lesnar fought back. He scored a takedown in the second round and eventually moved into mount before shocking the world, moving from mount to position for the fight-ending submission.

How would a rematch between the two UFC stars go? That's hard to predict. Carwin made a major mistake "punching himself out" as he admittedly forgot to breathe properly while attempting to put Lesnar's lights out Then he seemed gassed in the second round as he barely attempted to fight off Lesnar's advancing of position and submission attempt.

Carwin definitely showed he has a striking advantage over Brock but the former Minnesota wrestler has been improving a lot. And he was able to land a key takedown when it mattered most, although Carwin had out-wrestled him a bit to that point.

Regardless of when it happens, a Shane Carwin vs. Lesnar fight would be dynamite for the UFC, but for now, enjoy the other title fights on the horizon.
