UFC Legend and Hall of Famer Randy Couture easily beat James Toney at UFC 118. James Toney told the whole world how he was going to knock Randy Couture out. James Toney reminded the world of his prowess in the boxing world. He has 72 wins and only 6 defeats in his boxing career. He had 44 knockouts. Toney was a champion in many divisions in boxing Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Cruiserweight and even Heavyweight. James Toney failed a drug test after his heavyweight title.

James Toney spent six months in the gym learning how to fight as an MMA fighter. Randy Couture began training in MMA when he was eight. James Toney is 42 and Randy Couture 47. James Toney thought he just needed a few basics to beat the MMA UFC Legend Randy Couture.

This is the mistake boxers and former boxers make when they think they can beat an MMA fighter. They believe because they have a huge punch, they will come out of the ring victorious. The problem is there are so many aspects of the UFC and the MMA game. You have to know stand-up. We are not just talking about punching. There is punching, kicking, dirty boxing, Muay Thai, Take-down defense, and other aspects of the MMA stand-up game a boxer has no clue about. Randy Couture knew James Toney was a powerful puncher, so he did not stand in and box with the superior boxer.

The other mistake is a boxer believes he will knock the MMA opponent out. He doesn't realize how a UFC legend like Randy Couture has the whole fight planned out. One thing boxers need to realize is most MMA fighters are very smart. They are intelligent fighters who calculate every move they make in the ring. Randy Couture knew it would be better for him to take the fight with James Toney to the ground. Randy Couture is a Greco Roman Wrestler. He knows how to take anybody down to the ground. Many UFC fighters have been thrown to the ground by Randy Couture.

UFC Legend Randy Couture took James Toney down to the ground. A boxer never goes down to the ground in a boxing match. This is true unless, of course, the boxer has been knocked down or out by another fighter. James Toney found himself on the ground and under Randy Couture. He was like a fish out of water. James Toney did not know what to do. Six months in a gym is no match for a man who has twenty-two years (experience) as an MMA fighter.

UFC Legend Randy Couture began to land punches to the face of James Toney. James Toney could do nothing but take the punishment. Randy Couture had control of the former championship boxer. James Toney did not expect or prepare to be on the ground. He thought he was going to knockout Randy Couture.

Finally, the final thing a boxer is not prepared for when he steps into the ring with an MMA fighter. Randy Couture has submitted many excellent MMA fighters. He is schooled in Greco Roman wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. James Toney most likely cannot even spell Jiu-Jitsu because he doesn't know what it is. James Toney found out in UFC 118 when Randy Couture submitted him in the first round with an arm triangle choke.

In UFC 118 we found out for certain a boxer is not ready to step into the ring with an MMA fighter. The MMA fighter will win every time. The MMA fighter is versed in many types of combat fighting, while the boxer can box. The boxer does have a punchers chance. We all saw how that worked out for James Toney in his match against UFC Legend Randy Couture.

Do you think wrestlers who make the move to MMA have an advantage over the boxers? Unlike boxers they are use to being on the ground.

I remember during the first "extreme fights", one of the fighters was a boxer who said "I ain't got no respect for any of these other guys". He was the first one eliminated. Makes me smile.
