Before the fight at the weigh-ins, Chris Lytle gave an envelope to UFC President Dana White announcing his retirement and thanking him for the opportunities he received.
The Lytle vs. Hardy result ended up in his favor in the last fight of his career as Lytle choked out Dan Hardy at 4:16 of the third round in what could end up being the Submission of the Night. Lytle and Hardy had been waging a back-and-forth boxing match-style of fight for the first two and a half rounds before Hardy made a big mistake.
Hardy went for a takedown perhaps to try and steal the round but it seemed ill-advised because Lytle, a wily submission artist
Lytle secured a guillotine choked as he rolled over and got on top of Hardy and then finished him off. Lytle was then able to celebrate in the Octagon with his two kids as well.
They were the reason why he decided to retire. He said he loved being a UFC fighter as much as anything besides his family and that he needed to step up and spend more time with them from now on.
Lytle retires as one of the better welterweights in UFC history having more than 60 MMA fights to his name. He is one of the most accomplished pro boxers to enter MMA and he also developed his ground game to a high level which helped him in his successful career.
The UFC Hardy vs. Lytle fight wasn't expected to be a Submission of the Night contender but Lytle may have pulled it off tonight.
