UFC Vs. Boxing: Should Couture Step in the Ring with Toney Now?
Couture Being Challenged This Time Around
But does Couture have to prove himself now by stepping into the boxing ring with Toney?
Several different avenues have suggested that Couture should now box Toney and that the rules were stacked in Couture's favor.
Couture even answered a question about the whole boxing side of the argument at the post-fight UFC 118 press conference as he said he didn't plan to ever box Toney while admitting that he would probably be knocked out in the first round if it were to come to fruition.
For some reason, however, that admission was not enough for many hardcore boxing fans who scoff at the notion that Couture would be wise enough to not stand toe-to-toe with Toney in their MMA match, instead opting to shoot in low for the takedown before submitting Toney with an arm triangle.
The fact of the matter in this situation regarding UFC vs. boxing and Couture stepping into Toney's world is that Couture have anything to prove.
He was simply responding to a challenge that Toney issued to UFC fighters in general while also calling out Couture by name. He did what he had to do, and there should be nothing more to this conflict that that.
Toney got what he wanted: publicity and a big payday, and Couture got to be the hero yet again for the UFC while also coming out with a nice chunk of change.
Consider the Toney vs. Couture argument over: there's no reason to see Couture in the boxing ring with Toney because he's not a boxer, he's a mixed martial artist.
And really, now that the fight is over, there was no reason for Toney to step into the Octagon except for money, because he's a boxer and not a mixed martial artist.
Consider the UFC vs. boxing and Toney vs. Couture feud over with for now and hopefully everyone can go back to enjoying their combat sport of choice.
