UFL's New York Sentinels on the Move, Connecticut Are You Ready for Some Football?

Vonda Menard
Over a decade ago, 1998 to be exact, the New England Patriots and Bob Kraft toyed with moving the Patriots team to Hartford, Connecticut. After much speculation, the Patriots stayed in Massachusetts, got their new stadium, and Connecticut, well we got nothing. With the Hartford Whalers gone, the Patriots never here, Connecticut was hungry for another professional team.

Enter the New York Sentinels of the United Football League. On February 16th during a production that resembled the Patriots press conference, the announcement came, Connecticut was finally getting their very own professional football team. The Sentinels are coming to Connecticut via New York, and I for one am a very happy Connecticut resident.

The United Football League began last year with these four teams, Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and San Francisco. This year they're adding two additional teams, and moving the games from Thursday and Friday, to Friday and Saturday nights. The UFL is growing, and making changes. This is an exciting time for Connecticut.

The football team will join, the Hartford Wolfpack, New Britain Rock Cats, Mystic Sun, Bridgeport Blue Fish, and Bridgeport Sound Tigers in Connecticut. The team formerly known as, the New York Sentinels will play their home games in East Hartford, CT at Rentschler Field. Connecticut's newest team will share the field with the successful University of Connecticut football team. Maybe some of the Huskies magic will rub off on the team that finished 0-6 in its first year.

It's true the UFL isn't the NFL, but that doesn't mean good football won't be played. As a Connecticut resident, I want a professional football team. I want to bring my sons to the games, and if the athletes of the UFL behave in a manor similar to other athletes in Connecticut, it will be a pleasure to support them. My boys have received autographed balls and a bat from Rock Cats games, and had a great time at Wolf Pack games. The athletes on these teams are accessible, and appreciate fan support.

Come this fall I plan, to be at all of the Connecticut team home games. Connecticut, are you ready for some football?
