UFO Story: I Know You Won't Believe Me but --

What Did We See that Warm Summer Night? Stars? Two UFOs?

Pearl Grace
I was about 12 years old when I experienced a UFO sighting. My next door neighbor in Decatur, Illinois--I'll call her "Vera" and I were hanging around outside after dark. Sitting on a blanket, swatting mosquitoes, we spent the evening like we had so many others. Vera and I chattered like the kids we were. We stargazed, looked for the Big and Little Dippers and scoured the panoramic night skies for unidentified flying objects. This is my memory of just one steamy summer's eve so long ago.

Vera and I loved shooting stars. We often imagined we saw them. We looked intently for UFOs after dusk settled in. On this night, Vera noticed a "star" in the sky moving in a strange fashion. She pointed it out and we both thought it was moving strangely, parallel with the earth, rather than downward toward it.

We kept an eye on that "star" and looked for constellations and more shooting stars. When what do you suppose-I spotted a similar star on the other side of the night sky! This star also moved straight across the sky rather than horizontally toward earth. Both stars seemed to move with purpose in a straight line across the sky.

"Wait a minute," Vera said rather excitedly. We both, of course, believed in everything at the time--fairies, the boogie man, extra-terrestrial creatures, and UFOs. "They're moving toward each other, see? I think they're UFOs." I glanced at her thinking she was a little over-zealous about these 2 wayward "stars." But I couldn't ignore the fact that, even though they were on opposite sides of the sky, they did seem to be heading toward the other. Would unidentified flying objects do that?

Vera said, "I'm gettin' my mom." She beat feet toward her house while I kept my eye on the 2 unidentified flying objects. Not 3 minutes later, out marched Allie, Vera's mom, wanting to know what all the fuss was about. "Look, Mom, right there? Do you see that one? And there's another one over there. They're UFOs." Vera pointed in the general direction of now-UFO #2.

By this time, the UFOs were only about a third of the sky away from the other, still moving headlong as if to rendezvous. I said, "Are those shooting stars?"

Allie, looking thoughtful and replied, "Sure don't move like stars. It looks more like an airplane or something."

"That high in the sky?" I questioned as if I had some idea about how high a plane vs. a UFO would be flying after dark over my house.

"Hmmm," Allie mumbled, focusing now on the UFOs.

"Hey, I wonder what's gonna happen when they meet up?" Vera questioned.

Ever the fatalist, I said, "I bet they're gonna have a wreck and blow up or something."

As we watched and waited, the unidentified flying objects slowly continued their paths. They got closer and closer. Allie's voice level and tone increased. "They do seem to be heading straight toward each other," she said, sounding pretty worked up for a mom, I thought. "Maybe I should call the police and report them as UFOs," she added.

Wow, what a cool mom, I thought. Mine would no doubt assume Vera and I were just telling tales about UFOs and not even come outdoors to check it out, which is, of course, why I didn't involve her in this adventure.

Allie galloped toward her yard, yelling over her shoulder, "I'll be right back. I'm calling the police. You girls keep your eyes on those lights, UFOs, whatever they are."

Vera and I trained our eyes on the UFOs. It wouldn't be long before they met one another in that dark night sky, amidst the twinkly stars. Bang! Startled, I realized Vera's back door made that sound when we let it slam. I looked over and Allie, Vera's mom was again crossing the yard to where we stood in my backyard, under the clotheslines. "Have the UFOs gotten together yet?" Allie sounded breathless as she approached.

"Nope, but they're about to," Vera and I said in unison, staring up at the UFOs.

"What did the cops say about the UFOs?" Vera asked.

"Oh, they thought I was a nutcase, talking about UFOs," shrugged Allie. The three of us huddled together, our necks craning upward. We held our breaths as the UFOs finally reached one another.

Right before colliding, the UFOs each moved in a semi-circle around the other (like in the square dances we did at school), and kept traveling in their separate directions. No kidding. It seemed perfectly choreographed. "What the--?" Allie gasped. "Well, I've never seen anything like that it my life. They have to be UFOs to move like that. I'm calling the police again." She hesitated, looking up, just to make sure both UFOs were still there. Now, the unidentified flying objects moved in opposite directions, the span of summer sky widening between them.

Allie called to Vera as she crossed our lawn. "Come on, Vera, it's late, time for bed." Vera and I looked at each other. Our UFO adventure was almost over.

"We finally saw a UFO, for sure, and there were two of them," Vera exclaimed excitedly. "See ya tomorrow," I said as Vera trailed her mom across the yards. "Yeah, see ya" Vera said. Tearing my eyes away from the glittering objects, I shuffled into the house, hoping I'd remember this night forever. After all, how many people can say they saw not one, but two UFOs?

Fascinating story. I have yet to see a UFO, but I do believe we can't be the only inhabited planet in the universe.

FAcinating. There are many unexplainable things that happen in heaven and on earth!

Fascinating. Of course, UFO just means unidentified, not imaginary or interplanetary, etc. so it's reasonable to think you saw something that was actually there.

Interesting... UFOs will always continue to intrigue. Who knows what our govt. or other govts. might be up to up in the sky
