UFOs: From Science Fiction to Fact

Have you even seen or heard stories of something in the night sky that you couldn't quite explain? well your not crazy and spotting a possible Unidentified Flying Object (or UFO for short) is not quite an outrageous claim anymore it seems. Everyday credible people such as scientist, astronauts, researchers, police, military, pilots, and everyday people come forward with stories and present evidence to the fact that we truly are not alone in the universe. Even though UFO sightings have been around since ancient times, it seems that in today's society the existence of UFOs whether alien or not is common knowledge.

Everyday local and national newspapers, websites, television shows and magazines report stories of UFO sightings, This has been commonplace since all these things came into existence. That's right even newspapers. one of America's earliest written UFO sightings was in the book the History of New England by John Winthrop written between 1630 and 1639. The following is Governor John Winthrop's retelling of a matter brought to his attention by local witnesses

"One night in March of 1638 or 1639, James Everell ("a sober, discreet man"- Winthrop) and two companions boarded a little boat and set out for a trip on the Muddy River in Boston. They had been moving downstream for about a mile when the night's mysterious events began. The three men were suddenly confronted with the appearance of a huge, bright light hovering in the sky. The light "flamed up" as it hovered and appeared to be about "three yards square." As they watched, the light "contracted into the figure of a swine" and moved "swift as an arrow" in the direction of Charlton. For two or three hours, the unidentified light moved back and forth in the sky between Everell's location and Charlton. When the light finally disappeared, the men noticed to their dismay that they had somehow been carried against the tide back to the place where they had started their trip! Governor Winthrop noted, "Divers[e] other credible persons saw the same light, after, about the same place."

Accounts of UFOs in other countries around the globe expressed in literature and art date back much later and that's not even counting word of mouth native American stories in the U.S. Even though these stories were accounts from credible witnesses it wasn't until modern time through advances in photography, audio, and video that people became more aware and accepting of UFO's existence.

Some memorable people in recent times that have come out with their personal accounts of UFOs include Former Canadian Defense Minister Paul Hellyer, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, and Astrophysicist Bernard Halsch to name a few. One of the most convincing and credible statements came from Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter the first director of the CIA when he said "It is time for the truth to be brought out in open Congressional hearings. Behind the scenes high ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense" in a 1960 NICAP news release

The world is also a lot more densely populated today than ever, that means when something does happen over any city there are quite a few people to take pictures, videos, and tell the tale. there are many more stories today where UFOs will stay over a city for hours sometimes and have 100's of witnesses like in the cases of The Phoenix Lights in 1997 and The O'Hare Airport UFO in 2006. One of the most spectacular cases in America to date is the Battle of Los Angles, where the US military actually opened fire on a UFO above the city of LA.

With all the videos, photographs and eyewitness accounts its easy to see why UFOs have become one of the most interesting subjects in history. Now that it is quite certain they do exist, our mission now must be finding what force controls them be it of this planet or alien. Many will continue to speculate until we actually have a "documented" UFO to study. Whatever UFOs may be or whomever controls them may be trust me in this, UFOs do exist.
