Ugly Betty Getting Prettier by the Episode

Fans of the popular television series 'Ugly Betty' have noted that Betty is becoming prettier and more stylish by the episode. While I can certainly see how this is a logical progression following her career at a leading fashion magazine, I do feel that it stinks of a cliche conclusion to the show.

What I've always liked about Ugly Betty is the comedic aspect of the show - a slightly podgy, normal looking gal steps into a world of long legs, couture clothing and shallow mindsets. It is her friction with this world, in which she is clearly out of place, which makes the show so funny. We often see Betty prancing around in the most outrageous color combinations known to man, and she always manages to make us laugh with her less-than-graceful mannerisms.

However, the latest season of Ugly Betty has seen Betty's hair looking a lot more tamed, her eyebrows plucked and contoured, and her clothing less startling - making her clumsiness far less hysterical. In fact, all I can think every time I look at Betty is - where is the character that stood apart so starkly in the first few seasons? She's vanished, and I suspect that our so-called 'Ugly' Betty will continue to disappear as the show progresses. She will morph into Barbie Betty. What's worse, she'll probably go running off into the sunset with Dashing Daniel on her arm.

Needless to say, I will be upset when this happens. I like (or should I say liked?) the fact that this show was not a cliche. I was under the impression that some good, independent thought would drive the show to it's ultimate conclusion but, with Betty's transformation progressing at a rapid pace, I'm starting to have my doubts.

Watch - the next step in Betty's makeover will see the removal of her signature braces, perhaps some contact lenses and maybe even a corset. Get ready folks, we're in for a very obvious conclusion to the show.
