The ABC network returns with Season 2 of it's hit Latin American show, Ugly Betty. The series based on a famous Latin soap opera "Betty La Fea" premieres Thursday, September 27th. (check local listings for airing time) Salma Hayek is the Exec. Producer and once you pay attention to the show you can see the Latin roots oozing from the television. The overall concept of Ugly Betty is to promote beauty from within and shows how Ying and Yang life can really be in the world of fashion publishing. America Ferrera delivers a flawless performance as Betty Suarez, a plain girl from Queens, NY with no sense of style but dreams of becoming the next big fashion editor. She has braces , big hair and commits social suicide daily but that doesn't stop her from accomplishing her job at the end of the day. Mix that with the hustle and bustle of New York City and over 10 eclectic personalities and you've got the hit show of the season.

In Season 1, Betty was hired by Bradford Mead (CEO of Mode magazine) as an assistant to his nympho son Daniel Mead. The purpose being if he hired an unattractive woman his son will stay focused on his task at hand and that is running Mode. Daniel has a passion for women and upon seeing Betty he felt like he was being punked. Betty quickly learns that life is no walk in the park on the 30th floor of this fashion magazine world but with her confidence and intelligence she makes it, barely. Daniels' somewhat assistant, Amanda, is all Prada and Fendi and has no problem expressing her distaste for Bettys' wardrobe. She and gay friend, Mark, make it almost impossible for Betty to ever feel good about herself but that's the kicker...Betty never really lets them get to her. I see more developing out of Bettys' and Daniels' relationship in the next season. Then there is Wilhemina Slater, the creative director at Mode, (played by the beautiful Vanessa Williams) she is a diva in her own mind and expects top-notch everything. She injects her collagen and Botox almost daily with help from Mark and thinks nothing of "fixing yourself to stay young". She also will stop at nothing in order to take over Mode. And what would the high-fashion world of publishing be without an Alexis Mead, a trans-sexual played by Rebecca Romijn. Alexis, who used to be Alex Mead, is now Daniels sister. After faking his death and coming back as a beautiful model , Alexis ultimately plans to take over Mode herself. Mind you the entire time Daniel has been devastated by his brothers sudden death. In Season 2 of Ugly Betty, I believe there will be an unexpected twist as far as who ends up running the magazine. Back in the hidden closets of the fashion spreads and editorials Betty found her best-friend , Christina. She is the stylist for Mode and always has access to the latest and greatest goodies from top designers. Not one to care about her weight or outfit and certified cheap sheep, she encourages Betty to just be herself and work hard. She also gave Betty her first real designer purse which Amanda would've easily killed for. Together their different in style yet similar in humanity personalities form a tight bond of crazies who wouldn't be complete without the other. Season 2 promises to bring twice the drama and controversy at work and I , for one, cant wait.

Back at home, Walter who was Bettys' boyfriend in Season 1, was found cheating with next door neighbor, Gina, and so that was over as quickly as it started. He continues to come around and somewhat stalk Betty so I can only imagine the drama that will bring in Season 2. Betty quickly moved on from that and laid her eyes towards Henry. Henry works "downstairs" and therefore no-one really knows what he does , we just know he's really cute in that techno sexual sort-of way. He likes Betty a lot but an ex from his past moved in much quicker and now that was all a huge dilemma for a while. Towards the season finale though Henry admits his love for Betty and that's it . They left us hanging on that one. Now back home, Betty lives with her father, Ignacio, who though extremely patriotic is also the hardest working man in the family. Bettys' sister, Hilda, who prides herself on being the former Ms. Queens and is also the mother of Justin, the very gay pre-teen with dreams of becoming the next "it" director and loves Bettys' job way more than she ever will. He loves to play Dance, Dance, revolution and knows how to design even Martha Stewarts' jail cell. (which he did for a school project and won high honors) His father shows up from time to time but Hilda, being the typical Baby Momma that she is, always chases him away. I honestly think that they will elaborate more on this relationship in Season 2 because it seems as if he has yet to come to terms with his son being gay and I cant wait to see the turn-out on that issue. During the last couple of episodes Betty and her family visit Guadalajara (where her parents are originally from) and discovers a lot about her past and gets more in tune with her deceased mothers' history. All of these personalities make up what I consider the best show in the Fall line-up but I'll let you be the judge of that. Tune your televisions to Ugly Betty this fall and experience it for yourself.
