Before going in to 2.01, a brief recap might be in order:
The first season of Ugly Betty ended in chaos and confusion for both the Suarez and Meade families. Betty's love life ran aground just as she and Henry were about to begin their first date when Charlie arrived to announce she was pregnant. Then it was revealed that the baby may not be Henry's. Hilda's soon-to-be husband was shot in a store robbery though we don't yet know if he'll make it and Betty's father Ignacio was still stranded South of the border.
Add Alexis and Daniel to the possibly deceased as they were last seen moments before their car crashed- a result of Alexis's plot against Bradford. And Claire had just busted out of prison to stop Bradford's plan to divorce her.
"How Betty Got Her Grieve Back," the second season kick-off starts out with a fabulous scene all in Spanish and straight out of the telenovelas the show was inspired by. The full-tilt melodrama might obscure the emotive impact of the scene, which is essentially the death of Betty's relationship with Henry, but by the end the episode has come full circle and the final scene is a fittingly tearful funeral where Betty buries all of her memories of their brief time. And Daniel, yes still alive, buries his pill bottle, wondering if he can ever forgive himself for causing the accident that put Alexis in a coma, from which she has yet to wake.
The return of Henry... and Charlie from Tucson is mentioned, but three weeks after their return Betty hasn't spoken to him. Should she reveal Charlie's plot and her affair with the dentist? Betty decides since the baby may be his she'll leave Henry and Charlie alone.
Santos is no more, leaving Hilda alone again. Daniel has a run in with Wilhelmina
Amanda, who found out she was really Fey Sommers's illegitimate daughter, is eating like crazy and has become... FAT. One wonders how the binging is going to work out for the fiendish fashionista.
The deliriously wicked Wilhelmina as Bridezilla, continues to plan her wedding, but the news of Claire's prison break puts a strain on her already fragile nerves. Her "Natural Disasters" photo shoot in which she hilariously decides to do makeovers on women who have lost everything, (the skinny ones first) results in a great meet up between Wilhelmina and Justin, in what will hopefully be the first of many.
Oh, and Claire's plan to do who knows what to Wilhelmina backfires when she sends Marc in her place, waiting instead in Bradford's office for Claire to arrive.
All told the season appears to be off to a terrific start.

Post a CommentSorry, but I meant to clarify the bit about Santos, who is not dead. At least not for sure. Rather, his status remains ambiguous. He and Hilda don't leave her room or even speak to any other characters for the duration of the episode, which left me wondering: Is he still alive and recovering from the gunshot wound, or is she locked in her room imagining he's okay? So, maybe that's a stretch, but the fact that nobody else sees or talks to them during the entire episode was a little strange.
