Jewelry can compliment an outfit or an overall appearance, but the Ugly Jewelry Contest focuses on necklaces that don't look like they could appeal to anyone. The contest website shows three pictures of necklaces with charms that look like food, general oddities, hanging unflattering objects, and absolute eyesores. Sponsored by Land of Odds, a jewelry supplies website, the winner and first runner up prizes are shopping sprees on the site.
There are two ugly dog contests, both presented in California. The "Original Annual Ugly Dog Contest" is sponsored by Del Mar Kiwanis, and the "World's Ugliest Dog Contest" presented annually at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma. For the Del Mar contest, winners receive trophies, ribbons, and other prizes, and dog owners have the option to enter their dog into friendlier categories, such as "Cutest Dog", "Best Trick", and even "Dog Who Looks Most Like its Owner". The Sonoma-Marin Fair contest does indeed feature contestants from all over the world, and prizes include trophies and up to one thousand dollars.
While some people believe that all babies are beautiful, there are some obvious exceptions to the rule. A solution to having an unattractive baby is to turn bad looks into prize opportunities.
The contest sounds cruel and heartless; after all, there is an ugly dog contest, and some of the entries are downright frightening, but it's one thing to say you have an ugly dog and an entirely different thing to say that your child is ugly. In the official website for the contest, however, the FAQ section emphasizes humorous pictures rather than truly hideous ones. The contest states that the judges are looking for "pictures that capture a funny, ugly or silly baby moment", emphasizing silliness rather than meanness. Prizes include cash, and the amount depends on the number of entries, and also an Ugly Baby shirt, and photos are eligible to be compiled into a calendar.
Chances abound for anyone who has an ugly necklace, dog, or baby, and the humor and good nature of these contests make them a fun alternative to feel bad about the not-so-attractive parts of life. If you have something ugly, you might be able to make them into prize and cash winners.
