Uh-oh, Sony's Game is in Trouble Now

Playstation 3 Delay in Europe Could Become Ultimate "nail in Casket"

Jeffrey Davis

If you thought things could not get any worse for Sony's next-generation videogame plans, think again: they just did.

Or at least, that's primarily if you live in Europe. But it's worse just the same.

Because Sony, as far as I am concerned, has just hammered another nail into what may become the Playstation 3 console's untimely-crafted casket. And they did it by allowing production delays to mount so high that London, Paris, Berlin and other major cities in Europe - as well as countless other locations in the region - will not see the PS3 hit store shelves until March 2007, America and Japan notwithstanding.

Now we have been through bad news before from Sony regarding the PS3, the first bad apple being the unfortunately high price of $500-$600 in the United States alone - and that was announced, of all places, at the now-defunct E3 expo! From there, it was pretty much all downhill as rumors mounted of later-confirmed production snags, constantly-denied use of rights management software to lock games to one specific system, and frequent dissing of the PS3's chances by market analysts. Not to mention the lawsuit that led to the removal of rumble features in the console's controllers.

But forcing a delay in at least some parts of the world while keeping the American and Japanese launches on track? I call that Asinine with a capital A! This is the last thing Sony needs at a time when corporate execs are counting on a rebound of sorts from image-tarnishing issues such as those that they have borne witness to, such as bad luck in the financial department and the nasty battery recalls that have plagued partners such as Dell and Apple. And yet, that's exactly what they got. How despicable!

So what will happen to Playstation fans in Europe following this? My best guess is that a select few will go to the Xbox 360 if they prefer high-definition, while the majority go to the Nintendo Wii to take advantage of the motion control they would have got with the PS3 as well as for the lower price points. The result of this will be that Sony will eventually lose the throne where videogame hardware is concerned, while giving the house of Mario the opportunity it needs to get back on top.

And that will be a shame.

  • Sony has had bad news hit its next-gen game plans before.
  • Nintendo with it's Wii will have an unforeseen market opportunity.
Sony has done this before - the Playstation 2 launched worldwide over the course of nine months. The PS3 was originally supposed to arrive in stores worldwide over a matter of weeks prior to today's news regarding its launch.

the gate with a mismanaged launch, untested tech and a high price, while Nintendo goes for proven circuitry for the Wii while also pushing the limits on how a videogame can be experienced - not just with flashy graphics but with pure innovation as well (and in fact the Wii will be a balance of the two). And that's why Nintendo could finally climb back on top while Sony falls into a similar trap as those of the N64 and GameCube - completely reversing the positioning of both the Nintendo and Sony brands in the videogame market. And I'm definitely rooting for that.

Guess nobody else want's to take a stab at this issue? I'm still checking every now and then, guys. Anyway, while I'm here let me at least throw in a couple more points to spice this baby up a bit. As we all know, Nintendo went with game carts on the N64 which only got the company so far. Then Sony gets a game console to work around the CD-ROM format and Nintendo ends up at a disadvantage. Nintendo fought back with a Mini-DVD basis for their GameCube, although with proprietary code and not much room in the disc tray so you coldn't play DVD movies. Then Sony gets the PS2 out - with DVD Movie support and a cooler design compared to the GameCube's "purple lunchbox" asthetic - and also beats its competitor to the punch by releasing first! (That's probably when most gamers finally lost familliarity with Nintendo unless they were extremely lucky... and the violence and sportsmanship stuff took over, if not before.) Now here we come to the PS3 vs. the Wii and Sony is stumbling out of

And here's one last clarification for tonight: I ACTUALLY NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT MY STANCE IN REGARD TO BLOOD AND GORE IN VIDEOGAMES, SO GET A ~@#$%&? GRIP PEOPLE!!!

Sorry to keep on, guys and girls, but all of these ARE valid points. And I'm sure you all see where I'm coming from. But yeah, this whole Sony thing could turn into a firestorm that could reverse what Sony did to Nintendo, etc. (And to AC Mods: I would have tacked this on to the comment underneath this, but it would be too long a comment to pass and WE ALSO NEED EDIT BUTTONS!)

And one more thing (or two): I think that commenter's "Ghetto" theivery thing is actually "Grand Theft Auto" if I'm not mistaken. And yes, Mr. Myamoto did do a lot for the game industry even before Sony, as I have already explained (otherwise videogames would have taken longer to get any further under Sony if at all, and we wouldn't even have Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros. to waste time on in retro gaming sessions!)

That last comment or three is a three-part comment due to what I have noticed with the comment system. And while I respect that view as well (that's how it's been for a decade, after all) the times are bound to change - and seeing that the hardcore image is gaining buyers even at Nintendo itself (think Metroid, Disaster: Day of Crisis and Project H.A.M.M.E.R, all from Nintendo and all playable and/or premiring on the Wii) and then throw in Sony's recent blunders along with Nintendo's innovative controller - you'll see why the last phrase at the end of all that is supposed to say (in paraphrased form) that "it's the dollar that does the talking anymore nowadays," Nintendo's kiddy image notwithstanding.

ashamed of playing in front of their kids. Are these games aimed at only kids? No, they make kids as well as adults content playing them. I for one, would be extremely disappointed with Nintendo if they succumbed to bathing their games in blood just to appease people like you who cannot appreciate games without gore. I would like to think that Nintendo has more class and respect for their audience than that, all the while blasting aliens on planet Zebes as Samus. (hopefully you see my point) I feel sorry for the people who have subscribed to Sony's argument that Nintendo is kiddy stuff. It is the only tactic they could use against a company that has made bug-free, quality, hardware and software for over 20 years. And the only reason that they have not been on top is the fact that gamers of today know nothing pre-playstation. They only appreciate violence and sports. Unfortunately, we all have to change with the times, and in times like this it is the almighty dollar that sp

blah is what sells. Why? Because most people are mindless and violence is cool so long as it doesn't happen to them. (Think Gladiator) Peer pressure is also alive and well worldwide. People refer to Nintendo as a kiddie system. And it is more about how others will think of them then it is about how good the game is. People... without Shigeru Miyamoto, gaming would never have made it this far. Friends aside, play Zelda and then Grand Theft Auto and tell me which one is a better, funner, more addictive game. Now not to say that we should not have violence in games, but it should not be the focal point of this industy. The fun factor should be the bottom line. OK, so why am I defending Nintendo Mr. Jeffrey Davis? Because you said "that will be a shame" when they reclaim their throne. What is "Asinine with a capital A" is the fact that some people never outgrow their immature urge to attack things that are light-hearted, friendly, and something people would not be ashame

OK! Let me add my 2 cents about Sony. Granted, this is WAY off the subject of the European discussion... but I want to talk about some history of the game industry. I loved electronic games from age 4 on. I have had many systems and still own them. I had been a susbcriber to Electronic Gaming Monthly religiously for years. Before Sony hopped onto the scene, gaming was not mainstream. We were lucky to find other gamers who actually knew something about the industry. As far as the hardware, companies always duked it out fairly, using advertising, talking a little bit of smack, but mainly producing better games than their competitor. Things are much different now. Sony came onto the scene denouncing quality by using Playstation's 'coolness' in their advertising. Most people who walk this earth are followers, and if everyone else is doing it then I should to. Sony used this tactic to turn casual gamers into 'gamers'. Grand Theft Ghetto, first-person shooters, and hip-hop ba

This is a very written article, to the point and concise. Sony is in big trouble with all of the holidays that it will miss by not getting out the product in a timely manner or to mention affordable. There will be allot of bad press following this. Sony may come out with the product later and who knows, may even shine, however in the meantime Nintendo and others will have already covered the market during the holidays at a much more affordable price.
